Miners returning from Dawson
City report that whiJe provisions
are scarce a really worse problem
that the goldaeekers have to face is
the scarcity of light, oil selling at
145 a gallon and candles at a pro
portionately high rate. Alaska
has been represented as a country
rich in all minerals and producing
petroleum in abundance. If nec
essity is the mother of invention,
It ia a wonder that some enter
prising Klondiker does not bore
for oil. A successful strike would
be worth more than all the gold
claims on Bonanza creek or any
where else.
The following is from the Union
Scout and is very good advice:
Spurt advertising, like a. short
winded horse, never wins the race.
Just as well move your store every
three months as to do spurt adver
tising. People may not need what
you sell just now, but they will
seoner or later, and when they do
want it if they don't find your ad
where they first saw it, they will
naturally conclude you have quit
business. What a salesman is to
your business, just so is your ad.
Each sells your goods, and you
cannot prosper without both.
By refusing to accept the plea of
intoxication advanced by an il le
gal voter in extenuation of his of
fense, a Philadelphia judge hns
taken a stand which good citizens
will generally support, and which
has reason, judgment and common
sense back of it. (n a vigorous
manner the judge charged the jury
that if they found the prisoner had
voted illegally, as charged, it was
their duty to convict him without
regard to hia condition at the time,
whether he waB drunk or sober.
The jury promptly convicted the
man.
Secretary Wilson ha& informa
tion of the establishment of 20 new
manufactories of beet-root sugar in
the United States, which are the
direct result of the efforts of the
department of agriculture to en
courage this industry. These new
factories will represent an invest
ment of not less than 110,000,000.
Tammany gave Seth Low the of
fice of Member of .the Art Commis
sion of Greater New York, which,
we believe, carries no salary.
What Mr. Low did for Tammany
ought certainly to have entitled
him to a salary under the Tam
many municipality.
More farm machinery rusts out
than wears out. Thousands of
dollars' worth of farm machinery
is now standing out exposed to. the
weather. It is much cheaper to
' build shedding than to be always
buying machinery,
A writer on Indian songs says
they contain "explosive sounds for
warlike sentiments." They have
faded out from the ancestral vales
and hills where once they echoed,
but the college yell is a fair Bub
ititute. Samuel Jason, of New York,
taunted his wife about ''mother's
cooking," and now he is in a hos
pital. He thinks that mother's
cooking ia not now to be mentioned
with wife's basting.
The Cramps, the leading firm of
American shipbuilders, propose to
pend several millions on a ship
building plant at Seattle. A new
era for the Pacific opens rapidly.
The Pendleton Tribune and East
Oregonian are "warm members" of
the journalistic family. Both pa
pers scrap for every available bit
of news to be had,- and frequent
"scoops" are made. The latest U
one on the E. O. The Tribune
made its 'scoop" by obtaining a
letter from James Jackson, brother
of the editor of the East Oregon
ian, who is in Alaska, The East
Oregonian accuses the Tribune o(
"stealing" the letter. It makes no
difference how the letter was se
cured for publication, in journal
istic parlance the Tribune scored a
full grown "ecoop" on its evening
contemporary.
The Dalles Times-Mountaineer
has just issued a splendid souvenir
edition. It is a credit to the pub
lisher and is replete with informa
tion concerning the wonderful re
sources of Wasco and Sherman
counties.
THE ABSORBING QUESTION.
Portland Oregonian.
The arrival in San "Francisco en
route for Washington of San ford
B. Dole, president of the Hawaiian
republic, intensifies at this time
the interebt that is felt in political
and governmental circles in what
has come to be known in this
country as the Hawaiian question.
When the importance of the eleven
islands in the Pacific ocean known
as the Hawaiian archipelago ia
considered from a commercial
standpoint, the delay that has
characterized our national policy
in dealing with the question in
volved in their future ownership
is inexplicable. The singular im
portance of the position of these
islands is thus presented by a re
cent writer: "The distance from
Hong Kong on the west of Hawaii
to Panama on the east is 9580
miles; it is 4400 miles from Una
laska, the first port north of Ha
waii, to Tahiti, the first port southj
and in all that vast expanse there
ia only one spot where a ton of
coal, a pound of bread or a drink
of water can be obtained, and that
spot is Hawaii." ' The question ' of
the annexation of these islands
has been discussed from the stand
point of our national interests,
not only in a commercial, but in
a naval sense, until it is fair to
presume that every intelligent
reader is familiar with these
phases. It has been discussed
from the standpoint of its influence
upon the Ilawaiians and from that
of the attitude in which its ac
complishment will place this na
tion toward the countries of the
Orient, and of . the nations that
are now operating therein for the
purpose of widening their terri
tory, until further discussion on
these lineB is but "stale repetition,
hammered on the ear." It is ap
parent that there is no pretext
for further delay in the settlement
of the question. The time is ripe
for a decision, and there is every
indication that one will be reached
at a reasonably early day. Presi
dent Dole, who is now in San
Francisco, and will go forward to
Washington in a few days, ia Ha
waiian born and bred. He ia con
ceded to bo an honest man, who
has made a careful study of the
situation, and is well prepared to pre
sent the case from the standpoint
of Hawaiian interests. He was
called from the- bench of Hawaii
to the difficult post of president of
what might be termed an emer
gency republic, and he haB dis
charged faithfully and with a de
gree of intelligence possible only to
one thoroughly identified with the
inteiests of the people, the duties
of the position. The absorbing
question in the United States just
now is the annexation treaty be
fore congress, by which it ia pro
posed to add these islands to our
national domain, and the appear
ance of President Dole upon the
scene h regarded by the friends of
annexation as most opportune.

HOW TO FIND OUT.
Fill a bottle of common glass with
urine and let it stand twenty-four hours;
a sediment or settling indicates an un
healthy condition of the kidneys. When
urine stains linen it is evidence of kid
ney trouble. Too frequent desire to
urinate or pain in the bock, are also
convincing proof that the kidneys and
bladder are out of order.
WHAT TO no.
There is comfort in the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy
