The gratifying progress made
by the uouth in tbe development
of manufactures was incidentally
alluded to in the report of the sec
retary of agriculture in connection
with the statistics on the cotton
crop, It is shown that the num
ber of cotton mills in the southern
states has increased in ten years
1886 to 1896 from 232 in the
former year to 401 in the latter.
The increase in the number of
spindles has been still greater, the
advance being from 1,100,132 to
3,341,575, while the value of the
cotton manufactured into goods
has been increased in still larger
proportion.
The Choctaw and Chickasaw In
dians, of Indian territory, seem in
earnest in the determination to
leave United States soil if arrange
ments can be made with the Mexi
can government for the location of
colonies aggregating 26,000 natives
south of the Rio Grande. The
white men who covet the valuable
lands held by the Indians will not
regret their going, but the Indians
themselves may mako a seiioup
mistake. Doubtless they have
some real grievances, but in , the
main they are now well treated,
and many of them have become
rich and prosperous.
Miuno for whisky is what Kan
sas City is arranging to do. Some
40 years ago a cargo of corn whisky
was sunk in the Missouri river.
Where tho river then ran is now
dry land, and it is proposed to dig
down and lift out the barrels. But
it is no use for old topers to start
for Kansas City until further no
tice tho hoops may have given
nwny before this.
Gov. Desha, of Kentucky, more
than half a century ago had a wild
son who was convicted of murder
in that state. The governor
promptly pardoned his son and he
disappeared. That son is now the
most eloquent preacher in tho Ha
waiian islands. He knows the
language perfectly, and his great
est sermons are preached in it.
A traveled member of parlia
ment recently assured an inter
viewer that the Klondike temptra
ture is so low that "the breath is
frozen into crystals, and you must
move about to avoid being hedged
in by the result of your own respi
ration." That M. P. during his
journey laid in a considerable sup
ply of the frozen truth.
It is rather surprising to dis
cover from the internal revenue
statistics that the south has fewer
saloons in proportion to its popu

A medical journal advocates the
use of hot sandbags instead of hot
water bags in the sick room ,. As
considerable invalidism is caused
by the use of cold sandbags there
is an element of poetic justico in
the proposition.
X gallant California judge has
decreed that "a wife can be com
pelled to support her. husband by
labor." It is an undoubted fact
that multitudes of wives do that
without any order of courts.
Thirteen crimes were punishable
by death in Great Britain when
Queen Victoria ascended the
throne. Today there aro practi
cally but two treason and murder.
- Amonu tho bills introduced into
the house by Representative
Totiguo are several tho object of
which is to remove the ban of na
tional or military disfavor from
certain men who are scheduled as
deserters from the United States
army. It is proposed to remove
by act of congress the charge of de
sertion lying against these men,
and furnish them with papers ;of
honorable discbarge from the
ranks. The circumstances attend
ing a desertion must be indeed ex
traordinary to justify legislative
enactment transmuting it into
honorable discharge.. Since it is
the desire of the government to
hold men enlisted in its military
service to the terms of their con
tract, and, indeed necessary for it
to do so. aa far as possible, it would
Beem to be a measure of doubtful
expediency that would place the
deserter upon an equality with the
soldier who faithfully earns his
honorable discharge by serving the
full term of his enlistment.
The Overman bicycle company
recently asked that a receiver be
appointed to take charge of the
company's factory and all its
branch houses. Business matters
must be rotten when a company
that makes ten thousand per cent
from every wheel they sell, and
they cannot keep out of the hands
of a receiver. The Overman wheel
company has always been consid
ered one of the most substantial
bicycle institutions.
The Examiner's account of the
hanging of Durrant sounds a good
deal like Robespierre's joy at the
success of the Parisian head-chopping
knife during the French rev1
olution. The details in all their
minuteness, accompanied by cuts
illustrating all the ghastly details
during the various stages of the
proceedings from the cell to the
drop from the scaffold can be seen
in the Examiner.-
The sham autonomy proposed
for Cuba deceives no one. The
persecution of Christiana in Asia a
year ago was not more terrible
than the Spanish oppression today
in that unfortunate colony.
. The heaviest distribution of
holiday presents ever made by a
single man, under a republican
form of government, has just been
completed by Boss Croker, of
Tammany.
The government is to secuie
mules to pack provisions to Daw
son City. This does away with
the reindeer report which will soon
be followed by another that no
provisions will be sent at all.
The lire-eating Spanish editors
are again clamoring for war with
the United States, but the Spanish
government isn't hankering after
getting whipped off the face of the
earth.
Dawson City, unheard of a year
ago, is now celebrated the world
over for its golden proppects and
unrivaled cold storage plant.
There were 13 persons in Nan

The Surprisi of All
Mr. James Jones, of the drug firm of
Jones & Son, Oowden, III , in speaking
of Dr. King's New Discovery, says that
last winter his wife was attacked with
La Grippe, and her case grew so serious
that physicians at Uowden ami I'ana
could do nothing for her. It seemed to
develop into Hasty Consumption.
Having Dr. King's New Discovery in
store, and telling lots of it, he took a
bottle homo, and to the surprise of all
she began to get better from the first
dose, and a half dcieu dollar bottles
cured her souud anil well. Dr. King's

and Colils is guaranteed to do this good
work. Try it. Free trial bottles at

Judge Stearns Resigns.
Judge Loyal B. Stearns has resigned
8 Judge of the fourth judicial district.
Tbe resignation was sent to Governor
Lord yesterday, and is now iu his hands.
This act was in obedience to tbe com
mand ot Jndge Stearns' physician, Dr.
lioltC. Wilson, who declares that his
patient puts life in jeopardy by farther
work on the bench. His trouble is ner
vous prostration, whose only cure is ab
solute rest. This Judge Sterns will
take.
For three months be has been pulled
down by his labors. Tbe case was close
ly watched, and it was observed that a
little. rest always improved bis condi
tion, while a return to labor invariably
made him weaker. In Dr. Wilson's
opinion, continued work would result in
a permanent breaking down, so Judge
Sterns obeyed this command to resign,
and will s-ek the one remedy rest.
He has been on the state bench nearly
J 3 years, and a resident of Portland
since the early '70 J.
Short on Powder.
Cbicsgo, Jan. 10, A. special from
Washington says:
Uncle Sam iB short of powder for bis
high-powder guns. Uterhls warships
have all fired away tbe powder tbey
have on board, which tbey would do in
tbe course of a 10-hour battle, there
would be left in the entire country nearly
enough to supply them for a 10 minute
combat. And it would take tbe powder
mills of tbe United States with their
present facilities nearly a year to produce
enough powder to supply the chips for
another 10 hours' battle.
8uch is the substance of a report made
to Secretary Long by the board of ord
nance aud fortifications, which has rec
ommended tbe immediate building of a
government powder factory by which the
cost of supplying this powder could be
greatly reduced.
Ordinary powder, it must be under
stood, will not do for high-powder guns.
The Corbett Case.
Says a Washington special: It had
been expected that the committee on
privileges aud elections would meet to
take up tbe claim of H. W. Corbett to a
seat in tbe senate from Oregon, on the
appointment of the governor of that
state, but, owing to tbe absence of Sena
tor Burrow s, the meeting will not be
held until next Monday. Mr. Burrows
is the only republican on the committee
-who will oppose the seating of Mr.
Corbett. He takes the position that the
decision in the Mantle case is a preced
ent against the appointment of senators
where the legislature baa bad an op
portunity to act, which cannot be put
aside. His vote will thus have the ef
fect of sending the matter to the senate
on an adverse report, as without Mr.
Burrows the committee is a tie
Only a "Bluff".
It was reported about town Sunday
that oar y in the morning suicide had
been attempted by Glenn Busbee, a
young men well known here, who was
supposed to have swallowed a dose of
laudanum. Investigation showed that
very little, if any, of tbe poison got
down Bushee's throat, and the attempt
is supoosed to have beeen more of a
'bluff" than any thing else. Probably
as a sort of punishment, tho attending
physician administered an emetic in
liberal doses, causing the patient to
vomit vioh-ntl.v. He was brought
around all right when he had -recovered
from the effects of the emetic
The prank is presumably due to an ex
cessive jamboree in which Bushee and
some of his companions indulged. -East

The Discovery of the Day.
Ang. J. Bogel, the Leading drupgist of
Shreveport, Lv, says: "Dr. King's
New Discovery is the only thing that
cures bit cough, and it is the best seller
I have." J. F. Campbell, merchant of
Safford, Arii., fays: "Dr. King's New
Discovery ii all that is claimed for it;
it never fails, and is a sure cur j for
Consumption, Coughs and Col ls. I
cannot say enough for its merits." Dr.
King's New Discovery for Consumption,

Oregon Bananas.
Ripe bananas, grown in the Oregon
agricultural college greenhouse, were
exhibited on tho streeta ot Carvallis by
Secretary Yates last week. Tbe fruit ii
supposed to be the first of the sort ever
grown in Oregon, and was a toothsome
as bananas raised in the topics. Banana
trees have been kept in the college
greenhouse for several years, but they
had never before born fruit, and tbe
cause for the present production is eut
posed to be that the trees, which have
hitherto been potted, were ilanted in
mother earth last year.

Coal Mine Near Eugene
A coal mine of some promise has just
been opened upon tbe H, C.Owen farm,
west of Eugene. Tbe mine 1b not a new
one, having been discovered 15 years
ago. The discoverer failed to make a
business deal to bis satisfaction at the
time, and filled the mouth of the tunnel
and kept th location a secret. Recently
the location of the vein wm made known
to Mr. Owens, and he opened the tunnel
and tested the coal, which is found to be
a very good quality ofeofi coal. Tbe
vein is from one and one-half to three
feet thick. -
