TUESDAY.. FEBRUARY 10, 1885.
Tho London Times, commenting
Farneli's lectuve at Cork, says it is
impossible to accede to Lis demands;
that asking for aa Irish Parliament
is asking independence, pure and
simple, which is more than England
'can ever grant or Ireland attain.
Tel. DisjCttch.
More than -England can grant!
And why is it that England cannot
'grant'' independence to Ireland?
Les than one hundred years ago
that same arrogant, brutal country
insisted that she nevtr could and
never would "grant" independence to
tho Amprican Colonies; in this the
mother country had some show of
right on ht-r side, while in the case
of Ireland she has none whatever.
Ireland once had a Parliament and
independence, - which England, the
freebooter, through bribery and force,
wrested from that hapless country.
Castlereagb, liko Benedict Arnold
later, named his price and got it,
thus completing the surrender of his
country to tho tender mercies of a
powerful, almost savage, usurper.
.Slater of Oregon voted against the
bi:l to place General Grant on the re
tired list. Bat lie has been doing all
he could daring six years to get
1 itz-John Porter on tho retired list.
Grant hurt the rebels and Porter
didn't, and that is enough for Slater.
Portland Paper.
Just so. But it has been supposed
that Generals Bosecrans, Slocum and
Wool ford did "hurt tho rebels," and
yet they all voted in Committee of
the House against placing the great
mendicant on the retired list of the
army. How did this happen, if Slater
luust bo criticised for his part in the
matter? "Will the Mail explaine?
The principle known as anti-monopoly
is one of the foundation stones
upon which the superstructure of our
Government is built. For it is the
doctrine of equality equal rights,
equal privileges, equal restraints.
A herever there is found an abuse of
power, an incroachment of great in
dustries or aggregated capital upon,
the lesser industries and private
rights, thon the application of anti
luonopoly principles becomes the only
peaceable means of relief. Such a
condition of things prevails now.
There are corporations that should
be an unmixed blessing to the coun
try, but because of tho amount of
capital required to manage them and
by means of combinations among
themselves, they are practically mo
i.'?io!ios As monopolies they are ex
tortionate and oppressive. The op
position that is made to any attempt
at control or regulation of these mon
opolies by the people, displayes either
corrupt motives or a liberality of sen
timent that is equally as dangerous.
As a people, Americans are restless
under restraint. They have submit
ted to corners in articles of food,
hich enriched a few speculators but
'.:'ovo thousands into starvation.
1 h rough outrageonsly unreasonable
freights and fares they have built up
fortunes for railroad magnates, with
i. rapidity that rivals the work of a
logician's wand. They have seen
oar National domain, which should
) e a heritage for their children pass
Jag into the hands of syndicates
domestic and foreign. In the face of
r.ll these things there has hardly been
a a emphatic protest. Such liberality
is suicidal. It strikes at the very
foundation of our Ilepublican institu
tions. In the beginning of society all
men are equal. In the past we see
Uvat a few men were able, by the aid
o: cunning, or physical force, to work
up to positions of superiority. By
,'adiuii encroachments they finally
rasp all tho advantages of the social
jidjustmeat. The masses might toil
l-!t the prollts of their labor was re
vived by the privileged few. They
placed griveous burdens upon the
peoYie. uruii a Revolution would come
along to restore tlx: original equality.
The building up of a privileged class
vi nobility, whi'jh, in other times was
accomplished by physical force, in
tfcis country is threatened by the
enormois corrupting and coercing
power of wealth. It Is nob for nihil
istic, socialistic, or communistic pur
poses that anli-monopolists are work
ing, bat from the instinct of self
protection : and self-preservation.
ilumbild5siCal.) Slandaud.
The Republicans of the California
Legislature have elected Hon. Leland
Stanford to the United States Senate
to succeed Hon. Jas. T. Parley. For
many years past it has been custom
ary for the Republicans to depend for
success upon Democratic blunders.
Tho blundering business appears to
bo getting over to our side of late.
Blaine, according to our own witness
es, was blundered out of the Presi
dency. Stanford is President of the
Central Pacific Railroad, and a good
man, but if his election to the Senate
by the Republicans be not a blunder
which will cost them the State of
California at the' next election, and
hurt the party generally, then we will
bo agreeably mistaken. As this Coast
is now represented in the United
States Senate, the railroads and other
wealthy corporations seem to be all
right Coast Mail.
Rev. Dr. Talmage recently preached
a sermon to prove that there was no
conflict between scienco and religion,
and one of his illustrations was that
the first cable was laid by "Cyrus
Field, a Christian." Where Dr. Tal
mage got his information from we do
not know, but from the time when
good old Peter Cooper and his asso
ciates in the Atlantic cable scheme
got tho experience while Mr. Field
reaped the harvest, we have never
heard anything about Mr. Field to
denote that he was a Christian. A
scientist he may be, for he is inter
ested with Jay Gould in his outra
geous schemes for scientifically skin
ning tho public; and if Cyrus is a
Christian, then Jay is another, and
we want to be counted out. Justice.
Some sensitive people hold up their
hands in holy horror when laborer
and mechanics combine to keep up
wages or secure what they deem their
rights. But these same people have
scarcely a word of condemnation for
the railroad kings, -coal monopolists
or manufacturing barons, who com
bine to extort high prices for freight,
coal and other commodities. The la
borer combining is a "communist,"
while the capitalist combining is "an
influential business man." New York
Free Press.
It is admitted (by the over-production
political economists) that our
hard times originate in the fact that
we raise too much food, manufacture
too much clothing and dig too much
coal, and that the consequence is that
a great number of our people are
compelled to endure cold, wear rags
and suffer hunger, while all the rest
live in dread of poverty and desola
tion because of their accumulated
and still accumulating surplus things.
