Apply to James G. Blaine, Agnsta, Maine. The Civil Service Reform fever is of a malignant type among Federal office-holders. In the Forty-ninth Congress the Democrats have a majority in the IIouso of 43, while Republicans will control the Senate by 8 votes. Cleveland's plurality in New York 1,077. Blaine's plurality in Wiscon sin, 14,693; in Maine, 20,009; in Ore gon, 2,256; in Michigan, 2.839. How deeply dipped in gall was Blaine's pen when he wrote to Phelps that "the Arctic visaged, beer guzzle ing, torpid Dutch" had deserted the Republican standard! Poor, aged Dr. Burchard must be a Christian ' indeed, to meekly shoulder the curses heaped upon him without stint, by those who attempted the task of explaining away the Re publican defeat However, "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion" was a pretty hard shot. At the last session of their Legis lature, with a view to encouraging "homo industry," the Cherokee In dians passed a bill excluding "White men, preachers and teachers without respect to age or previous condition" from the nation. No return certifi cates issued. Verily, canvassing boards are not so black as they are painted. The last count in Illinois gives that State a Democratic majority of one on joint ballot in her Legislature, and thus is a period put to the Senatorial career of John A. Logan for a time at least Misfortunes do ' not come singly. If the fool killer ever comes along he will slay the lunatics who burned poor St John in effigy, and they are all Republicans, and good people will give thanks that their ranks are thus thinned. Butler dragged off many a Democratic vote, yet we hear of no Democrats burning the cock eyed coon in effigy. We are more liberal than that The Salem Vidette has found the man who defeated the Plumed Knight "It was not the virtue-loving Henry Ward Boecher, nor yet his fellow independent, George William Curtis. Neither was it the irrepressi ble "Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion" Bucrhard. Nor is St ' John of cold water principles, the man, and sulk ing Conkling should not be blamed. The man who tore the Republican party from . the public teat, who caused the Plumed Knight to tread with sorrow, wrapped in the 'bloody shirt,' to his political grave, was James Gillespio Blaine. Unlike his chief, who blubbers over his defeat like va .school boy, Logan looks the question squarely in the face and accepts defeat with the grace of Belva Lockwood. lie said to an in terviewer the other day that he had not opened his mouth to talk to a reporter since, the election. "What's the use ? I have nothing to say. We are whipped ; that's all there is to be said. The fact is, I feel like the man who stubbed his toe, and sat down on. a stump to nurso it- His neighbor came along and said: 'Hurts pretty bad, don't' it?' 'Yes,' replied the man, as ho hugged the toe up closer in his hands; 'and the worst of it is I aia too big to cry, and it hurts to bad for ruo to laugh.' " "Since Blaine's wail 'against the South the Blaine organs have broken out again on the subject of the "Solid South' and want to know why the 'loyal' States of the North should submit to be ruled by the rebel Con federate States,' aided by the 'cities of New York and Brooklyn, which1 practically control New Jersey and Connecticut, their suburbs.' As- a matter of fact President Cleveland receives 106 votes from the 'loyal' States, as the Republican organs call them, and 113 votes ' from States which seceded from the Union. Neither Missouri, Kentucky, Mary land nor Delaware was a secession State, and with New York, New Jer sey, Connecticut and Indiana they give 10 electoral votes to Cleveland. In addition to these "loyal States," Wisconsin, which gave Garfield close upon 30,000 majority, was carried by Blaine by a plurality of 9,000; Michi gan which gave Garfield nearly, 54, 000 gave Blaine a meagre 2,839, and Iowa, which rolled up over 78,000 for Garfield, cut Blaine down to 18,000 What humbug for the friends of this defeated candidate, who ran down the Republican majority in all but three States in the Union, and who was beaten on the popular vote, on the electoral vote, on the number of States and in the Congressional dis: tricts, to prate about the "disloyal vote" and whine over "injustice" to the North!
