I CONKLING AS A DEMOCRAT, A short time since it was reported that President Arthur, on the expi ration of his term of office, would be pleased to accept the United States Senatorship at the hands of the New York Legislature, believing that the step from the White House to the Upper House of Congress would not be so far downward as to compro mise his dignity. But his hopes are dampened by the appearance of a powerful rival in his Stalwart friend and associate, Roscoe Conkling, who however, and strangely enough, will ask the position not at the hands of Republicans alone, but Democrats as well. And the belief that he will re ceive this latter support is based up the fact of Mr. Conkling accepting a legal retainer from the National Democratic Committe, and with his Stalwart followers openly proclaim ing that he and they had knifed Blaine, as the Half-breeds had knifed Folger. The New York Star, speak ing of his'Jittle boom, says "Roscoe Conkling was once a Democrat, and in the present transition and state of political parties he may conclude that Cleveland is a good enough Repub lican for him, as he was good enough for the Half-breeds in 1882. In that event it is not at all impossible that he may be sent back to the United States Senate by a legislative coali tion of Democrats and Stalwarts." As a further evidence of the feeling among the New York Democracy fa vorable to Mr. Conkling, the World, in an editorial on the next Senator from New York, asks, "Would it not be to the honor of this State and to the credit of the people if party con siderations could be laid aside and the Leirislature be induced to tender the United States Senatorship unani mously to Roscoe Conkling?" Evi dently Mr. Arthur's mistake laid in not being a little more pronounced in his opposition to the election of the Reepublican Presidential nominee. for had he taken the leadership of the Stalwart-Independent bolt from Mr. Ulaine, Conkling had been put in the background. The negroes are greatly exercised since the election of Cleveland lest the rights and privileges guaranteed ihem under the Constitution shall be abridged; and, naturally enough, are emphasizing their displeasure at the Democratic victory by the commis sion or sucn outrages as only a ne gro's mind could devise. A dispatch from Tennessee states that "through out tne enure ooutn tne negroes seem to think some dire calamity is going to befall them owing to the .defeat of Blaine," and that "he was, almost without exception, their can didate." But what occasions the flow crocodile tears is the further state ment that toIt is almost pitiable to be hold their sorrow and dejection." Nor have the poor, deluded negroes halted at "sorrow" and "dejection," but as the legitimate outgrowth of Republican teachings their feelings Jbave been so wrought upon that they liesitato little short of murder. special to the World concerning the destructive fire at Eufaula, Alabama, says "it was undoubtedly the work of negroes, and is another evidence of the dangerous excitement existing among the race since the election of Cleveland." "While this state of af fairs," says the dispatch, "will prob ably die out before bloodshed results, ibe situation is far from pleasant. It has already cost over 1,000,000 in ;the South as exemplified in the Pa iatka, Florida, and Eufaula, Ala bama conflagrations." S. N. A. DOWNING, M. D., Physician and Surgeon, PORT ORFORD, OREGON.
