GHOULS AND DEMAGOGUES.
Senator Dolph, in an "interview,"
said that, on the tariff question, the
Democrats had repudiated their old
time idol, Andrew Jackson. JLet us
see about this. In his Farewell Ad
dress "Old Hickory" voiced the same
sort of anti-protection doctrine now
held by the great Democratic party.
Let ghouls and demagogues read the
following and stand rebuked. Presi
dent Jackson said:
"There is, perhaps, no one of the
powers conferred on the Cieneral trov
ernment so liable to abuse as the tax
ing power. The productive and con
venient sources of. revenue were
necessary to it that it might be able
to perform the important duties im
posed upon it; and the taxes which it
lays upon commerce, being concealed
from the real payer in the price of
the article, they do not so readily at
tract the attention of the people as
smaller sums demanded from them
-directly by the tax gatherer.
"But the tax imposed UDon eroods
enhances by so much the price of the
commodity to the consumer. And as
many of those duties are imposed on
articles of necessity which are daily
used by the great body of the people,
the money raised by these imposts is
drawn from their.pockets.
"Congress has no right under the
Constitution to take monev from the
people unless it is required to execute
spme one of the specific powers en
trusted to the Government; and if
they raise more than is necessary it
is an abuse of the power of taxation,
and unjust and oppressive.
"It may indeed happen that the
revenue will sometimes exceed the
amount anticipated when the taxes
were laid; and in such case it is un
questionably the duty of the Govern
ment to reduce them, for no circum
stance can justify it in assuming a
power not given to it by the Consti
tution, or in taking away the money
of the people when it is not needed
for the legitimate wants of the Gov
ernment." "
Dr. J. W. "Watts, the great "Tem
perance Alliance" mogul of Oregon,
who is traveling about the State at a
salary of 100 a month and : perqui
sites, teaching the people that their
only salvation from the curse of
rum selling lies in . united, separate
political action, is putting in his best
licks for Blaine, the candidate of a
convention which ignored all temper
ance suggestions in its platform, al
though it was besought to give rec
ognition to demands of the reformers
Mr. Watts's position involves treach
ery and recreancy so rank and inex
cusable as to call aloud for expulsion
from the high place he has occupied
in the ranks of the agitators for sepa
rate political action in the promotion
of the temperance reform. Though
the reformers have an unexception
able ticket in the field for President,
said ticket is betrayed and sold out
by the very head center of the move-?
ment in this State. This demon
strates the important fact that Dr.
J. "W. "Watts aforesaid agitates f or
pay and position under false pre
tenses. He makes merchandise of
the "cause" with contributions of the
rank and file jingling in his pockets.
Judas Iscariot was respectable by the
side of Mr. Watts, for, after he had
betrayed his Master for thirty pieces
of silver, his conscience smote him
and he went off and died.
The Portland, Maine, Argiis, speak
ing of Mr. lilame's slander suit
against the Indianapolis Sentinel,
says: "This is a very ojd trick with
Mr. Blaine. He tried it on us more
than twenty-five years ago, to the
tune of 20,000 if we ' remem
ber correctly. "We paid only for the
writ in the civil suit A year and
a half after, he had us indicted in an
other county and we promptly de
manded trial, but we did not succeed
in getting it, and at the next term of
court a nolles pros, was entered with
out our knowledge at the opening of
the term and official notice given us
thereof. The whole thing was mere
bluff. Western editors will not be
ffreatly disturbed by attempts in the
same lino now. If Mr. Blaine pro
poses to be a witness, as seems to be
intimated, there will be great inter
est to hear Mr. Blaine's version of
the affair. As a matter of fact, how
ever, lie will do nothing of the sort,
After the, election he will ge out of
court the' easiest way he can.-''
The . Blaine campaign managers
having subsidized Patrick Ford by
ordering 300,000 copies of the Irish
World for the campaign, try to reason
from this fact tnat the Irish must vote
the Republican ticket But a few
months since, tho same Patrick Ford
was wont to abuse Blaine in very
round style for general recreancy in
his shabby treatment of McSweeney
in a British dungeon. It may bo that
the price of 300, 000 campaign copies
of tho Dynamite World wrought
Patrick's change of heart toward the
Blaine crowd. But the Dynamite
World was not a Democratic paper
any way.
The average Republican is just
now easing his troubled mind over
Clevelands glowing prospects with a
firm belief in the statements of Blaine
organs to the effect that Curtis and
the "Hessian" cut but a sorry figuro
in a presidential contest anyway.
Sage reflection, but in the light of
the unstinted praise accorded Har
per's Weekly in former campaigns
11 Dnngs into painrui prominence
that bit of "other ox" philosophy.
The tellpgraph is the most efficient
and untiring advocate the Blaine fac
tion have. It magnifies every move
ment in favor of its client and belit
tles every circumstance in any way
likely to benefit Cleveland. But we
will have a different order of things
some day, under a system of Postal
Telegraphy.
McMasters, in the Free-mail's Jour
nal, the leading Irish American pa
per in this country, says there were
always Irish Republicans, and that
there is no indication at the East
that any greater number of Irish
Americans will support Blaine this
year than usually vote the Republi
can ticket.
Just as Iliddleberger is to the Ma
hone machine, so Buttler has become
to the Blaine machine. Both have
kicked out of the traces, as it were,
and have broken the "treaties." Both
chiefs are crying aloud for aid to en
able him to turn the elephant loose.
The flood light of publicity has
been turned on another batch of Mul
ligan letters. Fisher has turned
them over to the N. Y. press.
McSweeney of British Dungeon
fame writes a letter for publication
endorsing Cleveland, and denouncing
Blaine.
During the time that Blaine' was
in Congress that body gave to the
railroad companies $zzb,U(X),0(X) and
290,000,000 acres of-public land, and
Blame voted for every one of these
measures that he did not dodge.
The Congressional Record will be
searched in vain for a single vote of
Blame s against any of these steals,
And during that time Blaine accum
ulated the snug little sum of $20,-
000,000 by "judicious investments."

B. F. B. to J. G. B. : "I do not feel
that I shall prove a deadhead in the
enterprise." .Lancaster Post -
