"Public Office, a Public Trust" "BRICK" POMEROY. "Brick" Pomeroy has launched an other Democrat upon the sea of jour nalism, this time the United States Democrat, published in New York City, the second and third numbers of which have been received at this office. If M. M. Pomeroy is not ec centric, not to say erratic, he is noth ing. "With more than an average share of ability and originality, he is yet haunted with the idea of the im portance of hi3 personality, and hence is prone to give to all of his important writings a species of per sonal identity in poor keeping with the spirit of modern impersonal jour nalism. The Chicago Times when "Wilbur F. Storey is dead will proceed the same as before, upward and on ward, and, beyond the obituary an nouncement in its columns, the gene ral reader need not be reminded that Y. F. Store y ever lived. The same will bo truo when Medill of the Tri bune, of the same city, passes away; and when "Watterson of the Courier Journal is no more. When the Knapps of the St. Louis Republican are dead and gone, that paper will go right along as if nothing had hap pened. But, we welcome "Brick" Pomeroy back into the ranks of the great, pro gressive Democracy. He has been harloting among strange Gods for a few years past, having been struck abaft of the reasoning 'line with the Groonback craze. The Democrat is a largo, neat paper, and is afforded for 2 per year. The libel suit of Blaine against the Indianapolis Sentinel is likely to turn out a boomerang. The Sentinel com pany are anxious for the case to bo pushed, and the prosecution wavers. The Sentinel has seventy-five affida vits to prove its cnarges. it now transpires that a similar prosecution had been commenced against another paper and withdrawn, Blaine paying expenses. The story that he seduced the woman that became his wife (at the muzzle of a shotgun) is not a new one; and there are many circum stances connected witn nis marriage that lend color to the theory that all was not right For instance, his bi ographer states that he made her ac quaintance in Kentucky, and that thereafter they were married in Maine. But the most suspicious thin about the whole affair, is the mutila tion just now of the tombstone which marks the last resting place of the first born. That would expose all, and Blaine is the man for the emer fiency. ' Thelwaes of the stichers in the East "Weymouth shoe factory were ro dueed below the'living pointy where upon they threatened a strike. The bosses laid low for a while until cargo of imported Italian . stitchers arrived, when the old hands were un ceremoniously bounced. But the trouble of the kid -gloved bosses did not end here. The lasters of the fac tory held a secret meeting and re solved not to last for the Italians, The boot and shoo industry is highly The United States steamship Talla poosa was run into and sunk, off the coast of Massachusetts on the night of August 21st, She was struck in the bow' by the schooner James S. Lowell, and filled and went down almost instantly. Dispatch. The Tallapoosa was one of the very few Government vessels, pronounced seaworthy by a late examining com mission, and it was said of her that, though over a million dollars had been expended upon her in the way of repairs she was yet but a dismal hulk. This opinion of the vessel is fully justified now that she has been 6unk by a collision with a coasting schooner. Four hundred million dol lars have been taken from the people to make a navy, and yet the best vos scl the people had to show for this immense expenditure, has been but ted to the bottom of the ocean by a common schooner. Turn the rascals out We cannot account for the hostility of the Portland Standard to the ac tion of Governor Stoneman in re moving James A. Johnson from the position of Registrar in San Fran cisco upon any other hypothesis than that that sheet is still wedded to its idols, the railroad monopolists. If there has been a man who has stood up squarely for the people against the encroachments monopolies, that man has been Governor Stone man of California. All honor to the Governor for the removal of a pliant tool of Stanford & Co., who own forty thousand dollars in the Alia, of which paper Mr. J ames A. Johnson is editor. Governor Stoneman has shown him self to bo made of sterner stuff than to be used by the Stanford crowd, though the same be backed by the Alfa, James A. Johnson, the recro- ant, and Attorney General Marshall. Under the heading, "Coal Miners' Families Starving," a Coal Center (Pa.) special says: "The miners' camp was reinforced to-dav bv tho wives, mothers and children of the miners who were ar rested last week. In the afternoon, about fifty of them, headed by a gray- haired woman of 7U years of age, marched to the office of Squire Daw son and applied for admission to tlio poor house, claiming that they had no means of support The applica tion was refused. Tho party then took up the line of march to opera tor .Noels house, but some special omcers would not permit them to en ter tho grounds And Blaine says the workingmen aro prosperous. Harrison, Blaine's attorney in tho libel case was recently interviewed on tho subject of the suit, .and, in an swer to a question, stated that if the Sentinel company did not press the case it was not likely that it would come up for hearing prior to the election. But the Sentinel crowd aro pressing the thing; they have assumed tho offensive, and will force tho mat ter to a hearing if possible; however. they fear that Blaine will forestall tho investigation by withdrawing the suit and paying the cost as he did former case ho brought involving the same subject matter. It has been suggested to Jones, the manager of the Blaine campaign, that the "Plumed Knight" be withdrawn from tho race and that some accept able Republican be put upon the track. But Jones replies that to withdraw the Maine statesman under fire, would be a confession of a blun der which it is now too late to cor rect. It is only defeat' with Blaine, while it wonld bo defeat and disgrace with a substitute candidate. James A. Johnson had been twice elected to Congress from the Third District of California by the Democ racy, and then Lieutenant Governor of the State; and, after all, accepted the editorship of Leland Stanford's Democratic(!) organ, the Alia. Vale "Jim" Johnson. To the depths with you. It is fortunate for tho Democracy of California that Governor Stone man occupies the chair of State. He is firm, far-seeing, incorruptible; and this is why he has been made the tar get for the poisoned shafts of the minions of monopoly all pver the WM. H. AVERILL, GENERAL MERCHANT, deat.fr in.
