THE STORY OP "THE WAGES OF SIS' Mrs. Hope an employes of tbo Med ford mills dies. Mr. Dean, the own er, adopts her daughter Ruth.. Step hen Marley, cousin of the Rev. Geo. Brand Who is in love with Ruth, is an unwelcome visitor at the Darsonatre Brand secures a position for Stephen at the mill. Stephen makes the ac quaintance of Rose Dean and her sis ter Ruth and shows his admiration for Ruth. Stephen strikes, an ac quaintance with Barbara Dale, a mill hand. Rev. Geo. Brand proposes to Ruth. She refuBca saying: he must ask Dean. Dean consents. Stephen overhears and determines to win Ruth. He entices Babara from home and then deserts her. Barbara's father forbids her to return home. Sho implores Stephen to marry her. He refuses..Ruth meets Barbara and tries to comfort her. Lieut. Wentworth, Rose's fiance leaves to join his regiment. Barbara again asks Stephen to save her from disgrace. He tells her if she will ag ree to accuse Geo. Brand and tell Ruth it was Brand who wroneed her he will murry her. Barbara is horri fied but finally agrees. Barbara calls at the Dean home and tells Ruth that it is George Brand who has wronged her. Ruth is overcome at the confes Georgo and her friends accepts him. ness.. Stephen pays atention o Ruth and Ruth, anxious to get away from George and her friends aconts him. Stephen urges Ruth to marry him at onco and late that night Ruth leaves a note for Rose telling her she has gone forever and departs with Stephen. Two years later. Ruth and her babv in poverty are neglected by Stephen Juliana, un actress befriends Ruth. George Brand, now a revivalist rec ognizes her. Ho folows her home and offers to help her. Ruth, realizing her child is dangerously ill, accepts the aid. Stephen enters and demands money. He struggles with Ruth and finally overpowers her and flees with the money. Ruth rushes out and in to a saloon and grabs a bill from tha hands of Henry Wentworth. She re traces her stops and is followed by a policeman and Wentworth. Thov 0 take her away and swntenco her to prison. A few months later she is re leased, beliovcd to bo dying. Dean and Rose take her borne.
