Tlii does not mean that no stutterer can be, cured far from It but that there Is no treatment which Is sure to cure. If a stutterer be taken In childhood, when the alllictlon Is llrst noticed, and care fully treated he can unmet lines be cur ed nnd generally much Improved. Dr. Frank A. Ilryant of New York, writing In the .Medical Record, Bay thu llrst thing to do Is to make sure that there are no obstructions In the throat or nose, such as enlarged ton Ails or adenoids. The child must bo taught to breathe through his nose, deeply and slowly, as a habit, lie must not bo allowed to speak when excited nor when laughing Jr crying or In tho paroxysms of whooping cough. Ho must never be tickled. All causes of excitement must be removed. Fresh air, scrupulous cleanliness, plain, nour ishing food, moderate exercise and plenty of sleep In a dark room aro es sential, Mental treatment is of groat impor tance. Any measures that will Increase menial poise are of Incomparable vali;.. The stutterer must bo Impress--d with a desire to overcome what is inly a bad habit. Ho must be per suai'cil to study the great art of speak lug tonroctly. Thus, by careful, pa tient work on the part of his parents teacliers and physicians, will he gradu ally cure himself, or at least so Im prove as to make the nllllctlon cease to be si rlous. JUST A BOY'S IDEA. It Made the Invention of the Rc.-iplng Machine a Success. In Olied Ilussey of Ohio was In venting a reaping machine, the first ever designed In this country. Ills chief 'lllllcnlty was the cutting devb-e. which was throe large sickles set In a frame a.d revolved so as to cut Into tho grain. It would not work satisfac torily. A young son, watching the expert ments. nsked his father why he did not use a lot of big scissors, with one ban dlo fastened to one bar nnd the other handle to a sliding bar. thus opening nnd closing them. Ilussey Instantly adopted the Idea, substituting for scissors the two saw toothed blades which nre In common use today on harvesters, the cutting notion being quite similar to that of scissors. From the boy's suggestion ho per fected in one week n machine on which lie had In vain exercised all his In gcnulty for tho preceding two years The principle of that cutting device is the prlnrlplo of nil of tho great harvest dig machines, and its benefit to the farming Industry of the entire world lias been unsurpassed by any other In ventlnn for use on the farm.
