The Public should "recognize that there is only one justification for a public library supported at the gen eral expense; it must be an education al institution, with a purpose of af firmative good to tho community; and it must present, not the latest whim, or fashion, or notion, but tho first principles in science, the stan dards in conduct and feeling, and the approved in taste. A library i3 the place for confessing ignorance; it exists for the purpose of answering questions. And tho answer to which the enquirer is entitled is tho ' best answer that the collection as a whole and tho staff as a whole, can supply. To tho reader who wishes to increase the usefullness to himself of his pub lic library, the best of all maxims, however, is: Use it!" From an ar ticle by Herbert Putnam, librarian of Congress. That tho Bandon Public Library is steadily growing in usefulness the desk report for September plainly shows. It follows: Books circulated C22 Magazines circulated 171 Persona using reading room.... 434 Membership cards issued 14 Books donated 18 Books purchased 7 LIBRARIAN Oregon Farm Statistics.
