"WHEN ROME RULED" The historical background of this picture is accurately presented. Tho early persecution of the Christains not only in Rome but In the tributary provinces, ia made the moving forces of an absorbing story of love, in trigue, conspiracy, treachery and bloodshed. The acting, aided by rea listic settings, faithfully reproduce the life of those troubled and excit ing times. Perhaps some defects of plot construction might be pointed out if one should become extremely critical, but on the whole the events arc presented in a straight-forward thread of action that generally holda tho spectator's breathless interest. The most dependable features of the ...iiro fivo reels, those that will bo suio to be received with zest by ev cry audience, aro tho wild fierce lions which arc photographed on two dif fcrcnt occasions about to devour the heroine, but arc prevented each time by tho bravery of tho hero. The cs nociallv thrilling part is seeing the Cristain maidens being given over savage beasts for the delectation the Roman populace, and being res cued just at the right time by a young and handsome Roman 'yiiUi, who has been smitten with love for the fair unfortunate and gives up all family, wealth, brilliant prospects to marryher, the only demand on her part being that he become a Chris- tain. All tho settings are in keeping with tho ideas of Roman luxury and elegance in the provinces in tho time of tho Empire. The fourteenth installment, and as the picture nears the end the inter est is naturally enlarged. Just who will win out, or whether a compro miso will bo effected Is very much in the dark, and there are only two reel left to clear up the whole affair. The action in this installment is perhanps the best of the entire pic ture. Through tho 2,000 feet it is kept up, leaving a vory desirable pic ture. Another mystery is created in this enstallmcnt that will need clear ing up in tho finale. The butler wh has caused considerable trouble for Loubeque, is caught in that persons room. Tho spy drags him into Lu cille's room and after a fight appar ently kills him in cold blood. This is so out of keeping with the character of Loubeque that is is probable that Thompson faints rather than is shot Loubeque telephones for detectives and when they reach the houso they make a mistake and arrest Lucill and tho picture ends with a humorous scene in the police station where Lu cille establishes her innocence.
