EXPECT CHILD WILL SEE THROUGH EYE OF A PIG, Surgeons Anticipate Successful Out come of Remarkable Operation. An operation which marks a now step in surgery has been performed In tho Baltimore Eye, Ear and Throat , hospital. The entire cornea of the eye i of a pig was taken out nnd grafted on tho eye of a throe-months-old boy. Tho little patient is Dnvld Kane, who was blind at birth. It is said by tho surgeons nt the hos pital that every Indication points to success, although the grafting of an animal's cornea on a hunian being has never before succeeded. In former operations tho cornea used wns that of n rabbit. The recent operation was tho first in tho history of surgery to bo performed with tho eye of n pig. Several weeks ago, by a more ordinary operation, tho sight oA tho boy's right cyo was made almost perfect. The con dition of the left eye necessitated the use of the pig's corneiu In tho last operation the pig was chloroformed, tho eyeball taken out and the cornea cut from It. An extraordi narily fine needle and tine silk were used In putting the cornea u place uu til It has grown to the child's eyeball. Two cases lire said to bo on record where the grafting of human corneas gave sight to totally blind eyes. FISH AS CHICKEN FEED. Valuable Byproduct Utilized In tht Herring Oil Industry. A new development In a compara tively new Industry Is announced by Philip G. KuucUe. president of an Alas kan company engaged in the extrac tion of oil from tlio herrings which swarm In the northern waters. It is the utilization of the byproducts a poultry food. Here tho fish are again compressed to extract tho remainder of the oil, and tho guano or residue Is boxed up for the market Tho guano was formerly sold ns fer tilizer, but by n special process much of It is now mixed with a small per centage of the oil and becomes an ex. lellent poultry food.
