Hard Work.
"It Is a good rule to endeavor hour

White Bread.
Hygtentsta have long called attention
to the serious consequences of the in
creasing popalar preference for white
bread. At present dark colored bread
la despised as "peasants food." In
tho towns tho meanest workman will
eat only white bread. Tho flour used
for making this bread is obtained by
passing the meal through a very lino
store, so that it contains hardly any
thing but starch nnd cellulose. White
bread, which plays an Important role
with the French people, la thus ex
tretnely poor in really nourishing food,
and It la, to the Increasing consumption
of It that many bygtenlsts ascribe In
France the racial enfceblemcnt, the
diminution of staturo .and even tho
present development of tuberculosis.
Representations bnve frequently been
widely made on this subject, but with
out effect, for the bakers can provide

Some Surprise For the Doctor.
There Is a story current about
widely known London doctor. About
8 o'clock ono morning be was rung up
by a wealthy patient and begged to
come over at once. Turning out
bed ho rushed off. expecting to find
the man In extremis. Imagine bis sur
prise at being ushered Into a dining
room wnere a gay supper party was
assembled. The first remark made to
him was: 'Oh, doctor, I am so glad
you have come. We wanted you to
settle a bet as to exactly where tho
diaphragm Is." no not only told them
where the diaphragm was, but a good
many other things. The patient tried
to mollify blm by asking his fee. Still
furiously angry, be named a stagger
ing one. which, to bis snrptlse, was
paid on the spot London World.
Truth and Then Some.
A Cleveland man visited the land of
bis fathers on n recent vacation nnd
while In tbe Emerald Isle took a trip
to the lakes of Klllarney. His guide, of
course, told the most wonderful stories
and legends of the region.
"Pnt," said tbe Clevelandcr. "do you
ever lie about these tilings"
"No, sor." asserted Pat "I nlver He

A Puzzle.
"Pop, if anybody rides horse chest-
