In Missouri and some other central
western states there are roads that arc
called "three notch roads." They an
public highways as distinguished from
the roads that lead to it sawmill, a

farmhouse. A three notch road "goes

After the Revolution, of course, the
name of King George was omitted,
but the three notches proved useful as
a means of marking public roads.
Virginia colonists. It Is said, carried
tliti. practice Into Tennessee. Kentucky
and Indiana, and their children,1 in
turn, carried It Into Missouri.

Later, when they 'were formed, the
state decided that if the task were left
to the counties there would be little
road building. Accordingly, the state
constructed the roads nnd marked
them with three notches., . Later,

roads, they'' were designated In the
timber country by two notches. Prior
to and during 'tlie war "between tho
state's the distinction was preserv
ed, and three .notch roads were nl

dno town of importance to another.
Two notch roads were less important

roads. A rail road was a road leading
to a camp where men spilt rails, nnd
