Refugees Bring Dogs
El Paso, Texas, Jan 20.
The 3300 Mexican Federal
soldiers, six Mexican gener
als and 1360 women and chil
dren who sought asylum in
the United States after they
were driven out of Ojinaga,
Mexico by General Francisco
Villa's rebel forces, arrived in
El Paso today and were for
mally interned at the Fort
Bliss Military Reservation.
They are to be held by this
government indefinitely as
prisoners of war.
Arriving in ten trains from
Marfa, Texas, the refugees
were taken imediatly to Fort
Bliss, where they were put
into a camp inclosed by a
barbed wire fence and guard
by United States troops.
Each train of refugees was
run into camp on a spur. The
unloading presented varied
and animated scenes. With
the women and disarmed
Mexican soldiers there tumb
led off dogs and fighting cocks
saved from the battle at Ojin
aga, and lovingly carried on
the long march.
One family even unloaded
a burrow still paoked with
domestic utensils, 1 he pic
ture of a whole village of be
draggled and exhausted peo
ple suddenly dumped off on
foreign soil was brightened
by brilliantly collored blankets
and shawls of the women.
The Mexican generals at
first anneared dazzled and
speechless by the spectacle,
but soon they joined with the

General Mercado told Col
onel Perkins that the Mexi
can soldiers would do every
thing in their power to show
their gratitude to the United
States.
He then ordered all the re
fugees to dig ditches and help
put up the 1000 or more tents.
None of the foreign soldiers
or any of their officers will
be permitted to leave the
barbed wire enclosure.
Paroles Are Not Yet Due
Los Angeles Jan, 21. News that
Clarence S. Darrow, counsel for
John J. and James B. McMamara,
confessed dynamiters, told the Mc-
Mamaras' mother in Cincinnati that
her sons would be eventually releas
ed on parol was discussed here to-
day.
"The MaNamar.," said District
Attorney J. D. Fredricks, "are not
yet eletjible for parol. They can
not be paroled for at least seven
years.
"I don't know what will be done
with them when they make their ap
plications. As for my prosecuting
them on another indictment should
they be released, and as for my op
posing the parole, I can say nothing
at this time as the question is too
remote."
Miss Wilson Takes Floor
Washington, Jan. 19 Miss Mar
garet Wilson, eldest daughter of the
President, rose from her seat in the
audience at a civic improvement
meeting here tonight and made a
plea to have the schoolhouses of the
county openod to the public as "so
cial centers."
"The social center movement in
the final analysis" she said, "is the
fundamental principle of democracy.
No matter how cultured we are. we
cannot get ideas alone and we must
ger together and gel them from each
other."

doubted that when the time
comes all of the maritime na
tions of the world will be
represented in the line.
The plans of the Navy De
partment call for the appear
ance in line of about 100 war
ships, 68 of them under for
eign flags. The powers hav
ing great navies are invited to
send four ships each and those
with lesser naval forces use to
contribute two each.
The date for the assembl
ing of this international fleet
has not been fixed, but und
er the terms of the act of
congress it must be early in
1915, and as the voyage from
Hampton Roads to San Fran
cisco will consume at least one
month, the start must be
made by the middle of Jan.

We should like to know

ous candidates for Governor of

the definition of politics given
by President Wilson. Whilst
each one is sizing up himself
the voting public might in
dulge in the profitable pas
time of sizing each of them
on its own account.
