BRIEF OREGON NEWS Portland, Or., Oct. 28 (Special) An urgent invitation is being sent out to officials and members of all southern Oregon commercial bodies to attend a n,n;at "booster" con vcnlion at Grants Pass on Thursday November 6. The Grants Pass rVimnipsrMn club, assisted hv tlie lnisfn-ps men of a" Josephine county, will be in attendance to welcome the visitors. There will be a morning session at 9:30, but the general con vention will meet at r.30 p. m. The arrangement of a program for this session is in the hands of a commit tee of fifteen, of which Judge Win. N. Colvig, of Medford, is chairman, The principal object of this con vention is to induce the people of every southern Oregon community to concentrate all their "Hons toward attracting the tourist army, which is certain to visit the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. to the Wil lamette, Uinqtia and Rogue river valleys enrDitte. A great exhibit of all Oregon products is 10 be install ed at Ashland for the purpose of en tertaining and educating the travel ing public, and strong efforts will be made, by the wide distribution of Oregon literature, to induce pros pective visitors to this coast to pur chase their tickets by way of Oregon cither coming or returning. At a recent meeting of the jobbers and manufacturers of Portland it was decided to make Buyers' Week an annual event, the next one to be held from August 10 to 15, 19 14. An officfal report was made of the results of the buyers' week during September which showed ' that buy era from 263 stores in 150 towns visited Portland. Of this number 108 bought more than $500 worth, of goods, entitling them to a refund ot their railroad la re. wmie tne most of the buyers came from Ore gon communities, Washington, Ida ho and Montana were liberally represented and every visitor went home at peace with himself and his entertainers and satisfied that his time and money had been welUpent. With the development of reclama tion projects in eastern Oregon, the O-W R. & N. Co. is planning a campaign to educate the waterusers in the actual application of moisture to the land, according to an an nouncement made by President J. D. Farrell. The company expects tr send ah experienced irrigation man from farm to farm to give actu al working instructions on the best way to utilize the water. I low not to irrigate is as essential as how to irrigate and the expert will put. the farmer wise to all the benefits and dangers of the work. o A suggestion that might be pro fitably adopted throughout Oregoij, is that contained in an exchange to the effect that the United States De- p-utment of Agriculture ig to .en-i courage and assist in the organiza tion of "pig clubs" among the, yoting people in every agricultural com munity throughout the country. It is pointed out that pigs "are every where a profitable crop, thafe even tne smallest growers can niake a little money out of hogs and that every family can at least lowci5 the cost ol living by raising its" own pork. The "pig club" plan is a good one and worthy of general adoption. 0 Try the Unique for a good square meal and sweet bread. . , Thank You! o e o WE thank you all for your liberal patronage on our opening day Saturday, and will as sure you that the policy of this .store will be to please you and save you money, and remember, that we exchange or refund your money with the same smile that we sell. New goods will arrive on every boat. Again thanking you. PEOPLES 51015c STORES HARTMAN BUILDING The following figures taken from the records of the assessor' books, clerk and treasurer, will give an idea of what has become ot the monoy that has been raised for ro;ul pur poses during the last six ycais: There have of course,, been some chanties fiom time to time in the rd district boundaries. cwhich has more or less aflecled the mileage within the respective districts. Lhe milcnpc used iiio the sched ules which follow, is that of the roads which hrtve actually Ixen improved or maintained with the funds pro vided. In tne statement for 1912, Districts' Ko. 6, No. 8 and No. 19. levied special road tuxes which are included In the figures for ftuit year, though to all intents and jMlrposes knocked out by litigation. During the last six years practic ally all the permanent 0 lines and grades have been established and ttiere has been a systematic pro gression towards a definite method in road matters, and it is possible to get at the expenditure records and check them to .1 balance. The following figures tlo not take into account the ferries and bridges.
