OFFICIAL PAPErToF THE CITY OF BANDON
?rincipal Use of Each Breed
of Dairy Cattle.
- Oregon Agricultural College Cor
vallis,' Ore.. Oct. 23. 'There arc
only four breeds of special dairy
cows that arc really worth consider
ing bv dairymen of this state,'' says
Dr James Withcombe, director of
the College Experiment Station.
"These four arc the Jersey, Guern
sey, Holstcin and the Ayrshire.
EacJi of these breeds possesses a
superior adaptability o certain con
ditions. "On the small farm or on high
priced land where the production of
butler fat is the principal object the
Jersey is the best. If the produc
tion of high class milk lor city trade
is desired, no breed surpasses the
Gurnsey. Gurnsey milk is highly
colored and excellently flavored.
In sectipns where there is an abun
dance ol cheap feed, and milk to be
produced for condensing or cheese
making, no other breed equals that
veritable milk machine, the Holstein.
Under more rugged pasture condi
tions where a good quantity of milk
is desired without heavy grain feed
ing, the Ayrshire is the cow that
best fills the bill."

One of the most important phases
of the work will be rural organiza
tion, cooperatfon and credits. Farm-
err. who see the necessity of some
thing more than hrge crops to
make their work as successful as tt
should be will be informed of suc
cessful methods of organization and
direct marketing, as practiced m
most European and in a few Ameri
can countries. European farmers
are maicing better progress than
American farmers. The chief causes
of this arc the better co-operative,
credit and marketing methods ol
the European farmers, These sys
tems will be explained by Dr. Hec-
toc Macpherson who went to Europe
to investigate them, and recom
mendations for rural organization
in Oregon will be made by himself
and other experts.
An opportunity will also be given
farmers to examine the approved
machinery and tools of the College
collection, and as far as possible
to test their merits.
The dairy demonstntions will in
clude selection, feed and manage
ment of the dairy hotel; sanitary
methods of milking and Jiandling
milk; and separating, ripening and
manulacturing cream.
Further information about the
work of Farmers' Week may be had
by addressing a request for College
Bulletin No. 88 to Professor R. D
Hetzel, Extension Director, Corval
lis, Ore. Reduced fares for this
course will be granted by all Oregon
roads.
