Some states are blessed with unusually progres sive managements in their electric utility companies and in their state regulatory bodies. An outstanding example is Oklahoma. In that state, the corporation commission recently announced that a voluntary leduction in rates had been made by the Oklahoma Gas fir Electric company which would save the customers o f that utility $500,000 an nually. This reduction, which was worked out in a harmonious manner between the commission and the company officials, eliminates the expense, delays and discord that generally result from long and onstly investigations and rate hearings. This reduction fol- raade in January 1937. Oklahoma is to be congratulated fo r having public officials and corporation executives who can act in telligently and fa irly on questions such as this which are o f such vital public interest in the progress o f a state. Free Press, Free Speech Four-fifths o f the world today knows no free speech, and no free press. Outside the United States, the British Empire, and the Scandinavian countries, free speech and a free press are virtually unknown. There are 320 million people in Europe alone who live in darkness. The firs t steps in destroying democracy, as it has disappeared from the world, has been suppression o f the free press and curtailment o f free speech.
