Editorials
Adequate Speed Laws Needed In Oregon
During a recent motor t r i p through the
state o f Washington and British Columbia, Dr.
R. S. Welsh noted the contrast in the speed on
the highways as compared to our own state.
He stated the speed in Washington and British
Columbia is limited to 50 miles per hour with a
much slower speed in cities and intersections.
The highways are adequately posted and patroled
by the white cars of the tra ffic division.
He stated he soon knew when he had entered
Oregon on his return by the reckless manner
in which motorists passed him. Oregon, with its
no speed limit laws, invites the reckless driver
to step on the gas with a disregard fo r the safe
ty o f others.
This is demonstrated here at home every day.
Motorists speed to the very center of the town.
Every so often some state or city official
bobs up with a "stop killing” campaign by edu
cation or merit awards. Theres only one effec
tive system o f education fo r the speed demons,
and that is an adequate speed law with patrol
cars and traffic tickets.

One-Syllable Things
The three greatest masterpieces in literature,
it is said, are the Lord’s Prayer, the Twenty-third
Psalm, and Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. I n c i -
dentally, recall their wording:
"Our Father which art in Heaven, hallowed
be thy name.”
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
“ Fourscore and seven years ago."
Not a three-syllable word in them; hardly
any two-syllable words. All the greatest things
in human life are one-syllable things— love, joy,
home, child, wife, trust, faith, God.
