W, Struthers and son Kenneth were visitors Saturday at the J. B. Phillips home in Hillsboro. A student body imretingi was held Tuesday, February 13, in obser vance of Lincoln's birthday. Presi dent Kenneth Taylor spoke briefly concerning the character of the Great Emancipator. Delbert Burke, a member o f Mr. Webb’s public speaking class delivered Lincoln's Gettysburg Speech. C. E. Barker o f Aloha spoke about Abraham Lin coln's life, about incidents which Have not been recorded in books. Mr. Barker, who is a native of Illinois, related humorous stories as told to him by friends who had known Lincoln from his youth un til his death. One incident in par ticular impressed the students. It resulted from Lincoln’s fondness for children. While visiting Colonel Bid'ell in New York. Lincoln devel oped a great friendship with Col onel Bidell's small daughter, Grace. When he returned to the White House, Lincoln received a letter from his little friend. She reques ted him to tell her about his daughters, since he had spoken so much about his boys. In telling him that many of her friends thought he was a homely man, she asked Lincoln to grow a beard which would make his face more distin guished looking It is remarkable that during the strife o f the Ci vil War Lincoln had time to an swer his little friend’s letter but he did, replying that he regret ted having no daughters. It is known that sometime later, L in coln grew his famous beard. Both o f the letters have been preserved. There was also general discus sion at ih e meeting concerning the purchase o f shrubs to beautify the grounds near the tennis court. Many o f the students will donate shrubs. bb ---------------------- :---------------------- m H A Z E I.D A L E NEW S By Mrs, Tom Miller BB--------------------------------------------- B) Mrs. O. M.
