T h e use of colored wood* In the con­
stru c tio n of fu rn itu re h a t long t>een
know n, th e m ate ria l being atalned a f t ­

W ithin th e Inst few years, however,
a m ethod of A u strian origin has been
em ployed, w hereby th e wood la col­
ored when In a green sta te .
By m eans of heavy p re ssu re In a
d o s e d vessel th a sap Is driven out of
th e wood and I* replaced by th e color­
ing Suld. w hich m ay consist of a so­
lution o f th e m ore p erm an en t aniline
dyes. T h e twet kinds of wood for
tre a tm e n t a re found to he birch,
beech, alder, plane, elm and lim e ; oak,
d r and pine being u n su itab le because
th ey do not sta in uniform ly.
T h e colored wood Is used for fu rn i­
tu re m aking and for th e m an u factu re
of doors a n d window fram es. It can
ateo be em ployed for outdoor pur-
pooea. In which case no painting la
necessary, although a coating of v a r­
nish w ould seem to bo a necessity.
F o r th e d tlln g of ships, railw ay car*,
a n d sim ila r purposes, th is stained
