G raf Zeppelin won a fight against ad­
verse winds and the handicap of a
damaged port horizontal, and landed
here Monday.
The giant liner left Friedrichshafen.
Germany, T hursday morning, with 60
people on board, Including one woman.
The en tire trip took her about 109
hours.
All through the early hours of Sat­
urday night and for a great part of
Sunday the airship hovered in the
region of the Bermudas, fighting winds
and seeking to find a more favorable
course. For a tim e she even flew in
a southerly direction in order to gain
b etter conditions.
Only the most m eager information
was coming through and It was not
until noon Sunday th at the ship was
definitely located about 80 miles east
t y north of Bermuda.
The Graf Zeppelin la the g reatest
aircraft In the world. It is driven by
five reversible engines with 550 horse­
pow er each. Its fuel Is “blue gas."
It cost about $1,000,000 and is own­
ed by the German people, the money
being raised largely through popular
subscription. It has a maximum speed
of more than 80 miles an hour.

E. R. Pooley, Pine Grove orchardist
who has completed packing his d'An­
jou pear tonnage from a five-acre full­
bearing tract, reports 1420 packed
boxes per acre. The pears were sold
for $2.50 per box, bringing the total
value of the year's crop from each
acre to $3550, or $17,750 for the block.

ed more than $500,000 in the W estern

1928, as against 57 fires during the

ing to reports received a t the offices

Fire losses during Septem ber, 1928,
aggregated $392,0O0 as compared with
$250,000 in Septem ber, 1927.

In D eschutes county are changing rap­
idly to the raising of clover for seed,

The road over Mapleton hill, which

National park in Oregon is clearly in­
dicated in attendance figures for the

son. According to departm ent figures,
113,323 persons visited th 's national
domain, as compared with 82.354 dur­
ing 1927. This is an increase of
39,969.

Ottawa, Ont.—C anada's exports of
whisky to the United S tates increased
in value from $17,471,437 for the pre­
vious year to $18,629,159 for the 12
m onths ending last August 31, it was
shown here in ofticial Canadian trade
figures. Exports of beer and ale de­
creased in value.
During April, May and June of this
year, according to the figures, the
United S tates absorbed the total ex­
port of Canadian whisky -44,680 gal­
lons, valued at $1,919,355. This was
a heavy increase over the correspond­
ing period of 1927.

Fifteen survivors took part in the

The m ost im portant item s of busi­
ness of thé session were reports from
the child w elfare, rehabilitation and
Americanism com m ittees.
The child w elfare report recom­
mended a program of further co-oper­
ation betw een the auxiliary and the
v eteran ’s bureau. It also stressed the
Im portance of using preventive meas­
ures to minimize relief work.
The rehabilitation comm ittee made
several recom m endations to improve
the business operations of the reha­
bilitation bureau. They also moved
th a t a uniform gift program be pro­
vided to lim it the expenditure for each
gift to a hospitalized veteran to nut
more than $3.
The A m ericanism com m ittee recom­
m ended indorsem ent of the program
provided by the American Legion com­
m ittees for national defense. They
recomfnended th a t auxiliary units
m ake a survey of historic flags within
th eir departm ents and provide for
th eir preservation. They suggested an
international reception for all foreign-
born students attending colleges and
universities in the United States.
Mrs. Boyce Ficklen Jr., W ashington,
Ga., was chosen president of the na­
tional auxiliary. Five regional vice
presidents were elected. They were

Y.; Mrs. Fred K raem er, Madison, S.
D. ; Mrs. Louis Julienne, Jackson,

BYRD HEADS SOUTH
ON POLAR CONQUEST
San Pedro, Cal.—Commander Rich­
ard E. Byrd sailed away from here
tow ard the silences and m ysteries of
the A ntarctic.
He and m em bers of his party hade
goodbye to American soil as the whal­
e r C. A. L arsen put out past the break­
w ater of San Pedro harbor, with the
shrieks of w histles, the boom of guns,
and the cheers of thousands of per­
sons wishing them God speed.
They will go down to the bottom
of the world, to study the birth place
of winds and to fill in the blank
spaces of the world’s map.
For 18 m onths, possibly two years
or even longer, Byrd and his comrades
will he in the icy w astes as they seek
to fly over the south pole and adja­
cent regions.
The famous explorer and aviator
headed one of the largest and most
scientifically equipped polar expedi­
tions the world has known.
