Lisbon, P ortugal.—Tbe Polish avia­
tors, Majors Idxlkowski and Kubala,
w ere rescued a t sea off Portugal when
th e ir attem p t to span the A tlantic
came to an ab ru p t end, and were land­
ed at Leixos, n ear Oporto, Portugal.
The German steam er Samoa which
took them from th eir sm ashed air­
plane, the M arazalek Pilsudski, also
brought th e plane into port.
Tbe aviators had been in tbe air
36 hours of flying and had made a
g reat circle out over the A tlantic to­
ward the Azores during which they
had been sighted by two steam ships.
Radio reports from these vessels first
gave the world Intim ation th a t the
Poles had abandoned th eir attem p t to
span the A tlantic and were headed
back tow ard Europe.
They had reached a point only 60
m iles off Cape F in isterre when trou­
ble with th eir gasoline feed pipe forc­
ed an abrupt descent into the sea. The
big plane struck the waves with such
force th at the wings were sm ashed.
The crew of the Samos with difficulty
extricated the aviators and turned
th eir vessel for th e nearest port.

AROUSES KELLOGG
Boise, Idaho.—The republican state
convention will be held August 28 at
Kellogg, when candidate,? for senator,
representative in congress. Justice of
the suprem e court, governor and all
elective state offices will be nomin­
ated.
On the sam e d ate the dem ocratic
party will convene a t Grangeville for
the sam e purpose. The progressive
leaders will hold th eir convention in
Boise to determ ine definitely what
shall be done about nom inating a
congressional, judicial and a state
ticket.
Prelim inaries for these conventions
are now in progress. The delegates
to th e county conventions will be
elected a t party prim aries In the 44
counties in the state. These dele­
gates will hold county conventions
August 21, at which they will elect
delegates to the state convention.
Indications are there will be no real
contests before any of the conven­
tions.
W ashington, D. C.—W ith the term3
of the m ysterious Franco-British naval
accord undisclosed, it was revealed
for the first tim e th a t American of­
ficials are ‘‘seriously disturbed by the
probability" th at th e agreem ent in­
volves vital A m erican in terests and
perhaps endangers the W ashington
naval arm s treaty .
S ecretary of S tate Kellogg Indicated
his concern when he suggested the
question was too delicate to perm it
him to discuss it publicly a t this time.
He said he could not make known his
opinion of the agreem ent until he had
had an opportunity to consult P resi­
dent Coolidge.
Kellogg will seek. If not openly de­
mand, an explanation of th e agree­
m ent when he goes to P aris late this
month to sign the renunciation of war
treaty.
W hile th e 'F ranco-B ritish move is
considered in certain quarters as be­
ing aimed a t Italy ’s expanding naval
power on the M editerranean, rath er

S tates cannot adopt this view’, it was
said, until th e accord has been ex­
