Railroads Pay Heavy Tax
It is stated by good authority
that in the past thirteen years rail
road taxes have increased 22S per
cent, while the total sum paid in
dividends shows an increase of but
22 per cent. At present their tax
burden amounts to $1,000,000 a
day. The burden of this taxation
besides falling on stocks aud bonds
it is shown that ten per cent of
American railroed cecurities ar«
held by life insurance companies
and that one-third of the endow
ment funds of our colleges and
universities are so invested, as are
part of the forty-six million sav
ings deposits.
