"Wage War on Worms and Disease”
Is the slogan adopted by the poultry
specialist» of the New Jersey State
Agricultural college, who suggest sev
en “ words to the wise" In a campaign
ugainet disease In New Jersey.
“ Hatch or Buy Chicks Early” Is the
first. Figures from the farm egg la.v-
Ing contest for five years show that
thicks hatched before May 15 pro
duced 75 eggs the first six months
from November to May, and those
hatched after May 15 produced C8
eggs for the same period.
"Keep Brooder House Clean." The
steps s-uggested for cleaning a brooder
house thoroughly are: first, scrape
the floor, thus removing all accumu
lated droppings and litte r; second,
sweep the celling, wall, and floor;
third, scrub the floor, side walls, and
window sills with hot lye solution;
fourth, clean all brooding equipment;
nnd fifth, after the house Is dry spray
with an npproved disinfectant.
"Provide Clean ltange or Close Con
finement.” By clean range is meant
ground on which no chickens have
been raised for at least a year and
where no poultry manure has been
scattered for nt least two years.
If room Is so limited that clean
tange cannot be provided, close con
finement Is recommended.
“ Keep Old and Young Stock Sep
arate." Do not let the youngsters
come In contact with the laying stock
which may he carrying the germs of
coccldiosle nnd roundworm while be
ing apparently healthy.
"Build Screen Manure Pit.” This
w ill pnrtlally eliminate the common
fly which Is a fru itfu l source of worm
Infestation.
“ Supply Wire Dropping Boards." As
dropping boards furnish a good source
of Infection, these should be screened
to prevent the birds from walking on
the droppings. A half-inch mesh wire
stretched tightly beneath the roost
poles Is recommended.
“ Clean Dropping Boards Dally.”
From May to October, droppings
should be clenned from the boards and
placed In the screen manure pit.

Tnlted Stntes Department of Agri
culture, In ’discussing gapewortns,
points out that the two most Impor
tant Items In the control of this pest
nre, first, to keep the little chick«
away from turkeys, nnd. second, to
brood chicks only on clean ground.
Turkeys may carry gapewortns at any
age, the grown birds showing no evi
dence of their presence. The depart
ment reports that In most of the out
breaks Investigated turkeys have been
present on the Infested farm.
Ground on which chicks have been
raised before and on which mature
poultry has ranged Is almost certain
to be Infested with eggs of the round
worm nnd tapeworm, ns well ns the
gapeworm. Hence the young chicks
should by nil means he put on clean
ground each year. Blowing the lots
Is quite effective In breaking up pnra-
slte trouble.
