East Harlem, one of the most con tested districts In Manhattan has cur ried on a most Interesting health pro gram during the past six years, result ing In a decidedly reduced mortality rule, writes Savel Zimand, In the New York Times. The East Harlem health center Is operated by the health department of the city, assisted by private health and social agencies, During the last five years the general death rate of Manhattan hns increased while that of East Harlem has been reduced ma terially. The rate for Manhattan In 1925 was 4.9 per cent greater than In 1920 and that of East Harlem was 29 per cent lower, according to Kenneth D. Widdemer, executive director of the center. One of the most Important gains was made In the case o f Infant mor tality. From 412 deaths of children under one year of age annually In 1916-20, the number dropped to 191 In 1925, All of the children's diseases decreased. The American Red Cross was re sponsible for the origin of the center providing headquarters and the funds during the first three years. Six years ago the city health department and 22 qgencles established the real ceil ter. From time to time departments have been added and the facilities In creased.—Welfare Magazine.
