V. OUR COMIC SECTION APPLE SCAB IS CAUSE OF LOSS Famous Last Words A cool, wet period will result In tre m endous losses to New Jersey apple grow ers unless they tak e prom pt ac tion to protect th eir trees against scab. T his Is the w arning sounded by W. IL M artin, New Jersey Stute college plant pathologist, who continues: "Apple scab w as th e cause of seri ous losses In many orchards last year. In a num ber o f Instances trees were completely defoliated by th is disease. The fact th a t the fungus causing the disease over-w inters on th e fallen leuves m akes it a serious menace again this year. "In the old leaves, scab form s black spore-cases sm aller than the head of a pin. In the spring spores m ature In these and a re discharged Into the air during periods of rainy w eather. F all ing on th e blossoms or young leaves, the spores germ inate and produce the typical scab spots. “T he fact th a t th e spores are m a tu re Is of extrem e Im portance to the grower. He should be prepared to ap ply th e pink-bud spray at once, espe cially In the southern counties of the state. In m aking th is application the relation of rainfall to the discharge of the scab Spores m ust be kept clear ly In mind. W ithout rain there will be no spore discharge. F o r th is rea son It Is very essential th a t th e first applications be made before rath er than a fte r rainy periods. If made a fte r the rain the treatm en t will be too late to accomplish the best results. The grow er who applies his pink ap plication before n rainy period and then m aintains a protective coat of spray m aterial will have no difficulty in th e control of scuh.” Blackberry Planting Is Made to Last for Years Once a blackberry planting is made, it will last for many years, but the canM last only tw o years. These canes grow from th e crown In the spring and they live until a fte r the fruiting season of the following year. W hen they die, o th er canes nre ready to tak e their places, these new ones having grown from the crow ns d u r ing the spring. Since berries nre borne only on canes which are In th eir second sea son's growth, it will be necessary to govern pruning accordingly. U sually blackberries nre planted Just as early In the spring as th e land can be prepared, preferably on fall- plowed land. The earlier th e plants are set, the more chance they have of living, and the b etter will be th eir growth. Usually rows are kept about eight feet ap art, and th e plants are set In the rows from two and one-half to four feet apart. Beware, m v son s ta y a w a y jr o m P e t e r m a n ' s !
