EGGS BY WEIGHT
IS NOT FAVORED
The Danish method of baying eggs
by weight Is not proving satisfactory,
according to a recent report from the
U nited S tates D epartm ent of Agrlcul
ture, which has been Investigating the
D anish m arketing methods. Tffis Is
an interesting fact for American pout
try producers to consider as there
have been many argum ents presented
In this country favoring this method
of marketing.
The policy of the Denmark co-op
eratives has been to buy the eggs from
th e ir members on the basis of weight.
They adopted tlds policy so th at the
sm all eggs would be kept at home.
The plan has greatly increased the
size of the eggs produced until It Is not
uncommon now for th eir eggs to
weigh 90 ounces to the dozen. The
average weight of American eggs Is
from 23 to 25 ounces a dozen. This In
creased weight has undoubtedly been
one of the reasons for the popularity
of the Danish eggs on the English
m arkets. However, the fact th at all
eggs In Denmark are m arketed before
they are seven duys old Insures high
qunllty and Is an added reason for
th eir poimlarity.
In m arketing eggs In England, Dan
Ish coop erativ es find th at they can
not get a sufficient premium for tin
large eggs as compared with eggs
m ore nearly norm al in size to pay for
the difference In food value. This Is
especially tru e when eggs a re high In
price. As a general rule large egg-
have brought only 5 per cent more in
price while they contained 12 per cent
more food value.
Eggs th at have
brought the best retu rn s to the pro
ducer are those averaging from 21 to
20 ounces a dozen. These facts Indi
cate that American producers should
pay attention to the size of their
eggs, hut not to the extent of m arket
Ing them by weight.

MINERAL MIXTURE
BEST FOR CATTLE
The only kind of a m ineral m ixture
th at the farm er should buy is one In
which the ingredients are limited to
salt and compounds of calcium, phos
phorus, and iodine. Even the Iodine
Is probably not needed, says Prof. L.
A. M aynard at the New York State
College of A griculture at Ithuca, N. Y.
The m ixture should be sold under
an open formula. T here is no Justifi
cation for keeping a mlnernl form ula
secret, and there Is go much worth
less m aterial being gold In m ineral
m ixtures und stock tonics th a t one
can be safe only by knowing exactly
whnt he Is buying.
The college recommands a m ixture
of equal p arts of steam ed bone meal,
ground lim estone and suit, and sug
gests th at a compound of Iodine may
be added w here troubles with goiter,
big neck" and ‘‘hairlessness’’ occur.
Two p a rts of bone nieul and one part
of salt also make a good mixture.
When bone meul cannot be obtained,
two p arts of lim estone and one part
of salt may be used.
Most of the m ineral m ixtures on
the m arket contain many other sub
stances besides the needed salt, cal
cium, phosphorus, and Iodine. These
other substances are simply filler.
T here Is no Justification for Including
such m aterials as glauber’s salts, ep-
som salts, sulphur, copperas, char
coal, foenugreck, anise, and uux vom
ica. Exaggerated and untrue cluims
are made as to th e value of these
substances. Both leading veterin ari
ans and food experts advise against
their use in feeds. These m ixtures
sell a t exorbitant prices com pared to
the cost of the simple m ixture, yet
they are actlally worth much less be
cause In tbeiu the needed m 'nerals
ure dlluated with a large and un
known um ount of w orthless or harm
ful m aterial.
Most of the claims made for condi
menta! stock feeds ami tonics are
either misleading or absolutely un
true. If an anim al Is well it does
not need medicine. If it is sick it
needs specific treatm en t for Its trou
ble, not a shotgun prescription of a
variety of drugs.
Many farm ers whose anim als are
not producing satisfactorily or are In
poor condition are being Induced by
clever salesm anship and advertising
to pay ex orbitant prices for complex
mineral m ixtures or stock tonics and
are feeding them by the spoonful when
all th eir anim als actually need Is an
other pound or two of real food.
