DR. W ILLIAM CARTER, P resb y terian , B rooklyn.
Young people cannot help but have their doubts, but, thank God,
they cannot help but have their beliefs also. The perfectly natural thing
to do is to believe your beliefs and doubt your doubts. Do not doubt your
beliefs and believe your doubts.
The proper thing to do with a doubt is to starve it. The proper
thing to do with a belief is to feed it.
Doubt never comforted a man, helped a man, saved a m an; but be
lief will. Doubt is destructive, belief constructive, and it is the construc
tive we need in our religion or it will not amount to much.
Many foolish people believe doubt is the sign and imprimatur of high
est intellectuahsm, but it cannot stand the test of logic or experience.
Doubt is suspended animation of the mind. Belief is the active and mo
tivating process.

NY one who has ever motored through
the quaint sleepy towns of New
England has fallen In love with the small
houses that abound In that section
of the country—neut, white, unpreten
tious and with a touch of reserve about
them. Just such a house la the one
pictured here. It 13 equally adaptable
for town or country, and by merely shift
in g the living and entrance porches around can be built on a wide or nur
row lot without spoiling It architecturally.
The house Is sturdily built and has an exterior of wood siding except
for the unusual stucco panels that start at the level of the second 11, .or win
dows. The roof Is of stained shingles, pref
erably moss green, tn keeping with the
window shutters.
A bouse of this com
pact style Is very easy to heat, especially
when the specifications call for Insulation
throughout with celotex, which prevents
heat leakage, and keep» the house cool In
the summer.
The living and dining rooms are here
combined Into one large room flooded with
light by windows on three sides. Tha two
