Many of the injurious Insect pests
are most effectively controlled by

At thia lim e of the year m aterials

Injurious to thd leaves of trees d u r

List, deputy state entomologist, Col

“Among the insects In Colorado that
are effectively controlled by such ap
plications are a num ber of scale In
sects and the fruit tree leaf-roller.
The most Injurious scale Insects are
the San Jose, Europeau elm, oyster
shell, cottony maple, Tutnum. and Cot
tonwood scales. The oil sprays ure

most of the dormuiit spraying work,
although the lime and sulphur solu
Hons ure still used a great deal, espe
d u lly on the San Jose scale.
“The oil sprays ure usually spoken
of as miscible and soluble oils -and
oil emulsions.
These are all very
similar. They a re oils so treuted thut
they will readily mix with w ater and
be diluted. They cun he applied ut
any time during the period when the
leaves ure o ff the trees, providing the
tem perature Is above 00 degrees
Fahrenheit. When a g reat deal of
spraying is necessary, It Is often ad
visable to do p a rt of It during the
nice w eather of fall und early winter,
hut the m ajority of this work Is done
in the spring,
"It Is not too early to make a su r
vey of the orchard and shade trees

m aterials.
While the oil emulsions
cun be prepared ut home, It Is usuully
advisable for the average person to
secure his supply of the ready ¡ire-
pared oil sprays th a t are on the m ar

Control Scale Insects
by Using Winter Spray
D uring the p ast yeur the purple
scale seem s to have received u set
back to such an extent that there is
how not over 2 per cent of live scule
in evidence In any orchard. As a re
sult of this condition, the orchurdist
may neglect to w atch his Satsum a or
chard for purple scule, thinking that
the setback of last w inter ivas suffi
cient to carry him through the present
year. If there was 1 or 2 per cent of
live scale during the month o f June,
there may be a heavy Infestation be
fore the harvest tim e comes, and con
siderable Injury to the> fruit may re
sult during the month of Septem ber
and early October. T herefore, the o r
churdist should keep Ills orchard un
der close observation, and if purple or
long scule is present, he should lose no
time in spruying with oil emulsion in
o rd er to protect his fru it from Injury
from Wiis pest and ulso to keep the
trees clean and healthy.
Winter Spray With Lime-
Sulphur Is Now Favored
W inter spraying with lim e-sulphur
is a safeguard against San Jose scule,
fungus diseases, and many hark hiber
nating insects. T he cost and trouble
of applying this spray Is not g reat and

Is mnrvelous. But for the fact th a t
the adult scale insects are stationary,
and the babies move about for only a
few days, orchards would become
quickly and heavily infested. Scien
