Albany Next Sunday evening —according to announcements—the pastor at the local Methodist church will take for his subject, “ Is Christian ity a failure?” No doubt the pastor will prove that Christianity is not a failure In this the writer will agree, provided he does not confine ids version of Christianity to the narrow path through the scriptures that Methodist ministers are wont to confine their teachings. No, Christianity is not a failure, though the intolerance, bigotry and positiveness of some preachers that their beliefs are absolutely the only ones worthy of consideration, have made a failure of some preachers, and of some members too. There are some 800 religious denomina tions in the world today, yet some little preachers have the ego to be lieve that all who do not subscribe to tbeir particular dogma are on the wrong road and will not reach their desired destination. We sometimes wonder if it never oc- cured to some of these single track brethern that possibly they, them selves, might be wrong and at least one of the others right. Country Dailies Find They Are Handicapped The two Bend papers, both pub lished daily, have been consolidat ed. This is the result of attempt ing to publish two city newspapers in what might be termed, a good weekly town of 10,000. Bend is large enough for two real weeklies to flourish and pros per but not large enough for one small daily to make a howling suc cess, financially speaking. As a rule a small daily published in a town of 10,000 or less is on the ragged edge of bankruptcy. A six or eight page paper is not large enough to cover their town, county, state, nation and the world, and consequently they can only skim lightly over the surface of the real news and the people who want to know of all the current events are forced to read a metropolitan paper consisting of from twenty- four to forty-eight pages or more and all for practically the same m mey as the six page daily. Verily, the small daily is a “ flat tire.” The printers get the tnonev and the publishers get the experi ence. $29,686,214 in Dairy Products and Eggs Shipped Out of U. S.
