aa much below that of last year on
September 1.
The lower condition thia year was
attributed to ruat and drought. The
durum variety of wheat, however, was
found to have been affected leas than
others because ot Its resistance to
rust and drought.
The condition of durum wheat In
the four stales combined September
1 was placed at 84 per cent of nor
mal compared with 94 per cent last
year, while all spring wheat In that
section, Including durum, was given a
condition of 72 per cent compared with
90 per cent last year. Spring bread
wheats in those states were 68 per
cent of normal compared with 88 last
year.
The condition of all spring wheat,
including durum, throughout the Uni
ted States was placed at 76 per cent
of normal September 1. compared with
82 per cent last year, with spring
bread wheats about 73 per cent com
pared with 97 per cent last year.
Washington, D. C.— Necessity for a
change ot the interior department's
reclamation policies was urged upon
President Coolidge by Senator Borah,
republican, Idaho.
Sharp protest against the present
policy, and particularly against the
shutting off of water in the federal
Irrigation districts because of failure
of aettlers to meet deferred payments
to the government, has been voiced
by senators and representatives from
several of the western states.
Members of congress, both repub
lican and democrats, returned from
the west, assert that great dissatls
faction has been aroused in thetr
states because of the course pursued
by the Interior department and there
have been reports that this feeling
has grown so strong that the presl
dent probably would be asked to re
move Mr. Work.
Thus far, however, the W hite House
has received no protests In that form.
