Two squad leaders, Orville Looper and Jim Allen, and Phil ’larke were jumped to within a ew feet of the access road at the equest of Forest Supervisor Obye n Grants Pass. Although the road an be traveled by vehicle it is ix hours from Grants Pass and mmediate supervision over a saw- nill crew already on the scene vas necessary. Carrying a portable radio the hree jumpers were able to stablish immediate contact with )bye who aided in supervision rom his Grants Pass office. The quick action aided i n ontrolling the blaze to 15 acres vithin three hours. The local aerial project kitchen was kept busy supplying meals which were cargo-dropped to two 100-man firefighting crews start- ng the morning of Oct. 2. Meals lelivered by truck were also pro vided for t he mop- up crew.
