Outside Josephine County 1-75 .... ............................................ Deer hunters about ready for their annual invasion of the wood- are asked to be on the lookout for a damaging predatory animal—by of all people—the forest service. The unsociable porcupine is the object of a forest service suggestion that nimrods direct their practice shooting the way of the quill-laden animal. The prey of this particular Enemy No. 1 is trees, and thus the forest service’s interest during hunt ing season. The killing of about 100 trees is an average lifetime bag for this rod ent who girdles trees by eating the bark. Because the porcupine’s former enemy, the fisher, has been largely eliminated ‘by trapping, the assist ance of hunters is being sought. The porcupine is not protected by law and can be killed any time of year. So, as the hunting day wears on and you’ve yet to lift your gun to your shoulder (as is too often the case) do so if Mr. Porcupine is unlucky enough to cross your path. There’s no bag limit on him. $6.50 3.60 Entered as second class raaiier June 11, 1987, at the Post Office at Cave Junction, Oregon. MEMBER OF* OREGON NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS ASSN. TRUE CONFESSIONS We eagerly await newscasts and the daily papers these days to see what new intimacies of presidential and vice -presidential candidates’ lives have just been released. Campaign propaganda of late sounds more like a True Confessions novel than a frank consideration of important domestic and world prob lems of nationwide interest. Considering the administration’s undistinguished record we can’t real ly blame them for this current side track by publicizing Nixon’s finances and voluntarily telling how much Ste venson has raked in during the past 10 years. Such figures are probably of great interest to the bureau of in ternal revenue, but they don’t help clear up this voter’s bewilderment ov er the why and wherefores of the Korean war and other Truman ac complishments. Pastor Homer Thompson states that the purpose of this visitation ainpaign is to reclaim active mem bers in the Sunday School who iuve not been attending regularly luring the summer because of va cations, and to increase Sunday School and church attendance. OPEN SEASON 2 00 Six Months CHURCH NOTES Perhaps the latest Democratic technique is based on the hope Ike has drawn bigger checks than has Stev enson, reasoning that such would tend to draw the low- and middle income earner* into the Stevenson fold. Although we consider ourselves in this same bracket, our anxiety over the Korean war is yet to be appeased. Illinois Valley News One Year CAVL JUNE I ION COMMUNI I Y CHURCH Rev. Paul Kroon, Pastor.
