With aid and planning from resi dent soil conservationists Burnett and Rigdon, soil conservation eng ineer Robert Miller and the IV Soil Conservation district, a 2.000-ft riprapping job along Sucker Creek east of Cave Junction was con structed by Smith to prevent the usual deposition and gullying dam age. Logs and trees were laid along the banks and in deep cuts, cabled together and tied to standing trees and stumps to prevent their work- ing away. Willow cuttings will be planted in the riprap for the permanent protection of the dykes and bank Smith cleared the channel of stumps and trees which would oth erwise create a log jam, diverting the stream from its main channel. --------------o — 4-H Club Sends Five To Summer Camp The Illinois Valley 4-H Dairy Club met with Danny DeMersse man last Thursday evening July 10 with a potluck supper and wein- er bake. Deal to assume the part time duties of watermaster in addition to his posi tion as chief of police. Thayer resigned when he found city recorder Hubbard and coun cilman Sherier scraping three to four inches of red mud from the bottom of the two reservoirs. Dis covery of the mud was made by Sherier and Hubbard when the well i an dry unnoticed until water users complained of a complete lack of water pressure Friday. While the reservoirs were dry both floors and the wall of one tank were scrubbed clean. City authorities Monday night blamed the past three months of dirty city water on the accumula tion of mud on the bottom of the well. They maintained the red dirt was flushed down the lines each lime the well became low. The city water system assumed its ustlal role of being the chief topic at council meetings Monday night. Mayor Salvage called a spec ial meeting of the council and townspeople for Monday night, July 28 to air the problems sur rounding the water system start ing with its origin. Salvage said he wanted the peop le to know the reasons why tho system is incapable of ever carry ing its share of the city financial burden. The water system operated about $355 in the red during 1951- 52. Salvage added he wanted to air the problems involved with the financial burden imposed upon the city when the system was first bonded which will within a short cime require an increased tax rev enue tu retire bonds and pay ac crued interest. To cover the cost of increased city water use during the dry sum mer months the council increased he minimum water rate to $5 for users both with and without mete rs. Twenty new water meters re cently purchased by the city will mon be installed. The list of those users to get the meters is headed by restaurants, gas stations and >ther businesses believed to be us ing more than a normal amount of water. Police Chief Deal reported prog ress in the forming of a Valley .lot rod club for Valley youths. (See additional details elsewhrre ill this issue.) Boy Hunted by 30 Men Returns Alone Five-year-old Eddie Yarbrough wandered out of the woods at 8 p.m. Saturday night about two hours after he was missed by his parents and hunted for by about 30 searchers. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Yarbrough, missed Eddie around 6 p.m. and notified Deputy Sheriff Les Tythcott who organized a search party. Eddie returned home two hours later with but a few scratches after his wanderings in the woods along the west fork of the Illinois while the search party was hunting him near his home just west of Cave Junction.
