The purpose of a preservation is a -afety precaution against spoilage and t > increase the nutritive value of the silage. Molasses, Beet Pulp or Ground Grains that are high in carbohydrate value are the best preservatives known at the present time. B E E T PULPS—Recomended usage is 100 pounds per ton of green silage. This will vary with th« moisture content of the ensil age. If harvested from a direct cut and the moisture is high it might be advisable to use as high as 150 pounds per ton. On the other hand if the grass is more mature and, has wilted in the field it might be advisable to lower the amount of | beet pulp or add water. The big, advantage of beet pulp is that it will absorb the run off juices from I ’he ensilage, th« juices have proven 'o be the best part of silage. The disadvantage is that if the grass is oo dry the silage will not pack and heats, molds and spoils. MOLASSES—Liquid molasses should be applied at the rate of 60-80 pounds per ton of green en silage. Due to the liquid state of molasses caution should be used s to the amount applied on high moisture silage. If the silage is very high in moisture th« addition al molasses will tend to run off with the juices before absorption takes place. The big advantage of molasses is that it is usually cheap er per unit of T. D. N. GROUND GRAIN S—Recom mended usage of ground grains is from 100-150 pounds grain per t >n of green ensilage. Any of the grains may be used. This can be decided by the availability and cost of the grain. At the present time ground milo and ground barley are th« best buys. The big advantage of ground grain is the same as beet pulp, to absorb the run off juices. It will require more grain per ton of ensilage than it will beet pulp to do this satisfactorily. Disadvan tages are, dusty to apply, high price. Sl'LPlll'R DIOXIDE—A new method of preserving silage has been discovered in recent years. Most of the work done with SO2 gas ha been completed in the east but considerable interest has been -hown in Oregon and Washington this year. The Oregon State College is filling one silo with this gas and a few of the dairymen are trying it on a limited scale. The amount use ! is five pounds per ton. The cost if 20 cents per pound of gas and must lie applied with an applicator. Dis idvantages are no addl’d nutritive value and cost of applicators. Ad- antages according to manutagtur- ers are retaining-of carotene with spoilage kept at a minimum. Rev. and Mr». N. D. Arne*on anJ children of Snohomish, Wish., are here for a week’« visit with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Beard <f Caves Highway. Rev. Arneson has a pastorate in Snohomish.
