Mr and Mrs. Horner Snider of O'Brien returned home after a trip to Redding, Calif., Sunday to find their home on the Lone Pine road destroyed by fire. A logger, Snider was in the proc ess of remodeling their five-room home one and one-half miles from O’Brien. The fire had been spotted by a state forest patrol lookout late Sunday afternoon but a crew frimi the Illinois Valley Ranger Station arrived too late to save the dwell ing. Neighbors managed to remove a few pieces of furniture. The Sniders pitched a tent home for the summer, planning to build a cabin before fall. —------- <>-------------- Unrestricted Use 01 Forests Ends o Unrestricted use of the forests ended Tuesday, July 1 and fire re strictions must now be observed by anyone using the forests or travel ing through them, the U. S. Forest ry service warns. With the exception of developed 'ampgrounds including those at Grayback, Bolan Lake. Elk Valley, and Rourdough or Store Gulch, ■amping permits must be obtained from the Illinois Valley Ranger Station. Smoking while traveling: through forest areas, except on two way surface^ highways, is prohibit«! l'he motorist is permitted to smoke nly if stopped in a safe place. Two Valley school rooms were improved this week according to County Sup’t. L. C. Moffitt. The high school library and "barge out desk received a coat of paint from Chas. Downing. The wall* of the former music room in the Kerby school were re-lined, and will be painted later in the summer. Two shop men traveled to Sea ‘tie this week to drive back two new buses to he used in the county district next fall. Constructed by Pacific (’ar and Foundry in Seattle, ne rtf the two Kenworth buses will 1 e used in the Valley. The Valles' bus is the pusher type, having a capacity of 79. ------------- . RANGER STATION RAI Streets Approved for Oiling Nearly Completed More Parade, Amateur Show Entries Sought for July Fourth Celebration ' —_ _ _ _________________ JULY FOURTH CELEBRATION PROGRAM After having been built and op erated by one family for nearly 54 years, the Holland store was sold this week by Mr. and Mrs. Har ry Floyd to a Los Angeles couple. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cadby, who arrived in Holland June 29, will as sume owner. hip July 7. The Cadbys formerly operated a general mer chandise store in Corbett, Oregon and more recently have been in the grocery business in Los A ng eles. They have three children Howard, a senior; Jacky, a junior and Robin Gay. seventh grade. The Holland Store was built and o’iginally operated in 1898 by J. M. Smock, the father of Mrs. Floyd. The Floyds have operated the store almost continuously since 1925. Mr. Smock still owns the building 'and will rent to the ' Cadbys. The Floyds plan to retain the': J HollamP home and Mr. Floyd will remain as Holland postmaster. Lat er they may operate some ranch property they now have under lease. * ■ o ■ - — FOR 3 DAY WEEKEND Single Copy Ten Cents Cave Junction, Oregon, Friday, July 4, 1952 No. 11 Warm, Dry Weather Expected for Events; Concessions Readied Additional entries for the Friday childrens parade and Sunday night amateur show are being sought this week by committee chairmen for the three-slay July fourth celebra tion sponsored by the VFW and other Valley organizations in Cave Junction this weekend. Clearing skies after a wet seige of weather gave promises of warm, sunny weather for the holiday weekend and for the outdoor events planned. Crews from ’the VFW, Eagles, Ramblers, Legion and Girl Scouts started as early as Sunday constructing stands and readying the field and dance floor for the festivities. In the event rainy weather does appear over the weekend, some of the outdoor events including the dances could be held in Bridgeview Grange Hall, VFW Commander Al Mellow said. In addition to the events listed in the three-day schedule above, sev eral eating and game concessions will add to the entertainment of those staying in the Valley over the fourth. Concessions expected to he locat ed on the VFW grounds include: VFW auxiliary, eating; Ramblers, eating; VFW auxiliary, fish pond; Ramblers, poryr ride; Legion, throwing concession; Girl Scouts, ice cream; and Eagles auxiliary, dart game and popcorn. Parents and children making preparations for amateur show and parade entries will be rewarded for their labors by cash prizes to the winners. -------------- o-------------- Ramblers Want Rodeo for Jubilee p The Rough and Ready Ramblers are considering staging rodeo e- vents for the annual Jubilee over Ijiho, Dav if a local stockman with cattle will aid them, they announ ced this week. Profits from concessions in the July fourth Celebration will aid in fiaancing the construction of a fence and necessary chutes. According to Mrs. Jack Sowell, the Ramblers prefer using the ent- tle of a Valley rancher for the rodeo even.ts. Cattlemen interested in assisting the Ramblers in add ing this western flavor tw the Jubi lee can contact any Rambler mem ber. -------------- 0------------- - Valley Farmer Fined On Assault Charge • An Illinois Valley farmer plead ed guilty to a charge of assault and battery in Justice of the Peace J. R. Matthew’s court in Grants Pass Monday morning and was fined $5 and costs. A. A. “Buster” Winterhottom admitted giving a beating Friday to Warren Mayfield, a logger, who leases land on a Holland place operated by Winterbottom. Winter bottoms’ home is on the same place which is owned by Mrs. Alberta Weaver.
