Farmers Insurance Group LOCAL From Your County Agent Testing Seed Only Way to Insure Quality Looking at a handful of seed is a poor way to judge whether it is good or bad. No one can accurately judge the number of weed seeds or the percentage of germination just by looking at and using a sample. Field-run seed is usually a long gamble. The only reliable seed is tagged seed—that is, seed which meets requirements of the state law. But it is essential also that the farmer know what the information on the tag means. The seed law.sets mini mum requirements, and requires that the tag carry certain infor mation, but the buyer still must evaluate the figures on the tag. A good index to value is to multiply the percentage of purity by the percentage of germination. Thus, seed with a germination of 'JO per cent and a purity of 98 has 88 per cent live, pure seed, while a lot showing 80 per cent germina tion and 95 per cent purity has on- ly 76 pounds per hundred of live | pure seed. It is also important to notice what the impurities are. Two lots with the same percentage of pur- ity may contain different amounts I of weed seeds and inert matter,! for example. Weed seeds are the I most undesirable element; inert matter, such as dirt or chaff, is not particularly serious. Seed tags must show the per centage of all weed seeds, name and approximate number of sec- ondary noxious weed seeds, per- centage of other crop seeds and inert matter, germination, per- centage of hard seed, and dyte of germination test. State law pro hibits primary noxious weeds (ser ious perennials), and establishes tolerances for secondary noxious weeds (mostly troublesome an nuals). So as a word of caution— read the tag and you may not be so surprised when the crop comes up. CAVE JUNCTION, —fitting lifetime gifts for graduating seniors JOHNSON JEWELER 133 S E.
