portation act, according to Chas.
H. Ladd, farm fo re ste r with the
sta te fo restry departm ent.
Ladd pointed out th a t the last
session of the sta te legislature
passed an act which states that
“ logs, poles, piling and pulpwood
shall not be considered agricul
tu ral commodities o r products.”
This m eans th a t w here the farm er
is using his own truck to tra n s
po rt certain woodland products to
m arket he m ust secure the regular
PUC perm it and pay such fees as
are required under the tra n sp o rta
tion act of the state, the forester
added.
However, he points out that
there are exceptions in the case of
fuelwood, poets, shakes and bolts.
These may be hauled under the
exem pt license w ithin the fa rm e r’s
restricted radius. C hristm as trees
are exem pt only w here the farm er
has m aintained them as a plan ta
tion and is handling them as a
crop.
“T here has been considerable
criticism on the p art of the farm er
for this req u irem en t,” says Ladd,
“ in the erroneous belief th a t it is
the re su lt of a regulation. It is
not a regulation. It is the law and
it is the duty of the sta te officials
to see th a t it is enforced.
