Steelhead Season Opens In The Illinois River Steelhead angling opened for the Illinois River last Thursday, December 15, and will remain open until F eb ru ary 15, 1950. The river is open from the mouth upstream to a point 400 fe e t be low Pom eroy dam, exclusive of the area from the m outh o f Fall Creek (below the Illinois River falls) to 400 feet above the falls. It does not include any o f the tributaries of the Illinois. A steelhead is classified by the Game Commission as ‘‘a tro u t not less than 12 inches in length". A lthough m any salmon have been reported in the river, salmon ang ling is not legal in the Illinois or its trib u taries The lim it is 3 steelhead in any one day, but not more than 6 fish in any 7 consec utive days o r in possession a t any one time. Reports on angling success have been m eager, with an occas ional good catch rum ored, but it appears th a t no real “ killings” have been m ade to date. E xperts a ttrib u te this to the excessive cloudiness o f the w ater, roiled by recent rains, and m aintain that fishing should become good when three or four rainless days have given the w ater a chance to clear. --------------o-------------- O ’B R IE N N E W S r * Antonia Andler Mrs. A ntonia A ndler, aged 79 years, of Gallup, New Mexico, who has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dora Combest, for the past several m onths, died Thursday, December 15, a t the Combest home.
