Ashland's
Shakespearean
Festival Aug. 2
Ashland is now preparing for
the main event of the year, the
annual
Oregon
Shakespearean
Festival.
Folks who helped in
other events are now repairing the
outdoor Elizabethan stage and
erecting signs of welcome to th e
ater-goers expected there fo r the
ninth annual dram a program .
Ashland is the only com m unity
in the country which boasts an
operating civil Elizabethan th e a te r
1 organization. While student act
ors from no less than 10 d ifferen t
states are rehearsing for the A ug
ust 2 opening, the technical de
tails of the program are being
directed by a large corps of vol
unteer Ashland workers.
Five plays will be produced in
repertoire this season so th a t vis
itors may see the entire program
in five evenings, or at the most,
six ‘‘Romeo and Ju lie t” will open
the program , followed by the sec
ond of the historical sequence,
"R ichard II." A troupe of young
sters will assist in the presentation
of the
fanciful "M idsum m er
N ight’s D ream ," and a revival of
the successful showing of "O th el
lo” will be seen. The program
will be completed with "T he T am
ing of the Shrew " which delighted
audiences at the San Francisco
World F air in 1939.
