ATLANTA.—A little boy with
a nail in his stomach was taken
to the Ponce de Leon clinic to
be magnetized.
He was and so was everybody
else.
Little David Wright, 2, of Elli­
jay, became so fascinated by the
magnet which doctors were us­
ing to remove the nail that he
swallowed it cheerfully. He even
helped pull it up again.
Doctors at the clinic said it
was the first time they had ever
performed such an operation on
so young a patient without first
putting him to sleep.

Juju, whose short career has In­
cluded everything from breaking
fractious colts to comforting ten-
derfeet up accustomed to the wilds
of the Smokies, is the youngest
licensed guide in the United States
park service.
Juju has been wise in the ways
of horses, people and the wilderness
for a long time. By the time she
was five, she thought nothing of
climbing into feed boxes and trying
to bridle horses considered on the
frisky side by other wranglers By
12, she needed little instruction
from her mother and father, who
have ridden most of the 600 miles
of Great Smoky trails.
Her father is convinced Juju
could lead a week’s pack trail
group, but right now he confines
her to day rides or “short night-
ers,” in which guests ride to pre­
determined campsites, spend the
night and return next day to the
mile high ranch.
She can stretch a sketchy lean-
to-by herself if she has to, but she
seldom does. Her scarce concealed
contempt for city dude helpless­
ness, plus the fact most of the
ranch hands want to go along,
leaves her little more to do than
supervise.
Says her father: “It’s her only
fault as a guide; she takes all the
hired help away.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA.-How does
the American woman stack up in
the international matrimonial der­
by?
If she had to compete for John
Doe's affection—and wedding ring
—with her sisters from other lands,
would she emerge as a champion
or a badly outclassed also ran?
More and more, authors, psycho­
logists, sociologists and Just mere
men have been making uncompli­
mentary comparisons b e tw e e n
America's women and those of
other lands.
For instance, foreign corres­
pondent Leland Stowe, on the basis
of 20 years of travel on five conti­
nents, says that the American wom­
an is neither all she thinks she ts nor
much that American men assume
she is. Compared to her overseas
sisters, she doesn't score as many
top points as might be expected.”
He draws up a lengthy indict­
ment Among other things, he says,
American women have been ac­
cused of being the most spoiled,
self-centered, aggressive, disinter­
ested in men and homemaking,
expensive, restless, rude, conversa­
tion hogging, unfeminine, Indivi­
duality lacking u n h a p p y and
dissatisfied women in the world.
Are any or all of these things
true? If they are, what is the rea­
son?
These questions were directed In
Philadelphia to a young French
bride. Her answers are given be­
low.
“American women should be
the happiest in the world. They
have more of the things that make
life easy for a woman—refriger­
ators and washing machines and
vacuum cleaners.
“Instead, they always seem to
want more and more. In France
women are happy with what they
have.
“Perhaps that is why the United
States keeps making progress—be­
cause its women want change. But
it also means that American women
always seem discontented.”
So says Mrs. Marie Bonds, brown
haired, brown eyed native of Biar­
ritz, France, who came to thia
country to marry Ralph Bonds of
Haverton, Pa.
Since that time she has accom­
panied her husband, a member of
a brother team o f organists,
throughout New England, the east
coast and the midwest, and haa
thus been able to observe American
women in various settings.
“Why should American men pre­
fer women of other nations?” Marie
muses. "That is hard to say. After
all. American women are attrac­
tive. much better informed than
European women—they get more
opportunity to get out of the house,
to read and see things.
"However, the American woman's
point of view is entirely different
from, for instance, the French
woman’s.
“Take the matter of marriage. I
believe we are more serious about
