YOU'RE GOING
TO HAVE A
TOUGH TIME
«
BABY, IF WE
DON’T STOP
GOVERNMENT
WASTE
OU’RE a bit under voting age, son,
but even when you have a long gray
beard you’ll still be paying for the waste
an d sp e n d in g of th e p re s e n t F e d e ra l
adm inistration.
Y
In fact, young as you are, you already
have a debt of more than seventeen hun
dred dollars to pay oft — and you are
getting in deeper every day. Seventeen
hundred and twenty-one dollars is your
share of today’s “public debt”
- money the government has
spent, but not as yet collected.
A baby born before the present
adm inistration got on the job
started life owing only a tenth
as much.
Don t let them kid you into thinking you
“owe it to yourself." We won’t adopt the
Russian system of calling in all cash and
bonds and then giving back one ruble tor
every ten taken in, so the national debt has
to be paid off just like any other loan,
mortgage or I.O.U.
If you think owing $1721.00 is tough,
just let the give-it-away boys
stay in power another four
years. Under the present gov
ernment rule it’s costing be
tween eight and nine times more
to run the government than it
did before they started throwing your
money around. In fact, it’s costing you more
to be governed than to eat. The nation’s tax
bill for national, state and local govern
ments in 1948 is about $50,000,000,000.
*1 he nation s food bill is approxim ately
$39,000.000.000. We know that you didn't
mind spending to win the war—that you
won't mind spending to keep the peace —
but you just aon t w ant to see your money
wasted through governm ent inefficiency.
However, the country you’ve been born
in to —even if it is in a bit of a mess rig h t
now—can be straightened out. T here’s a
team of men—Governors Thomas E. Dewey
and Earl W arren—who have the answers.
As Governors of their states they’ve con
clusively proved it's possible to run a gov
ernm ent less expensively, yet serve the
people better. In New York, for example,
personal income taxes have been reduced
40% and a $673,000,000 surplus built up ’
while such services as education and public
housing have been improved.
So, baby, just about the
nicest Christm as present your
m other and dad could give you
would be a fine new adm inistra
tion down in W ashington — a
Dewey-W arren adm inistration.
