m y feelings, but I ’ m scared o f audl
rnces, see, and e ve ry tim e I get
up in fro n t o f one m y m outh sta rts
to tw itc h and it m akes m y nose
w ig g le —lik e a ra b b it's . I ’ ve seen
m y s e lf in a m ir r o r and I got to ad
m it i f I was one o f the fe llo w s I ’d
be c a llin g me B unny, too. You get
w hat I mean.
Nine years I ’ve been in Jake
L ittle 's orchestra p la y in g the sax
and the bassoon. F irs t we w ent a ll
over the co u n try b u t now w e ’ve
got a neat little spot in H ollywood,
Jake like s me and he th in k s I p la y
the sweetest sax he e ve r heard, but
a long tim e ago he q u it passing me
solo p a rts because sure as I ever
got up w here I faced an audience
I'd get nervous and m y darned
m outh would s ta rt tw itc h in g and
well, there 1 was.
I'v e had to s it back and watch
plenty o f o ther fellow s come and
go, g e ttin g the solos, g e ttin g the
hands, ge tting the raises in pay,
and g e tting new and b ig g e r con­
tra c ts some place else. Now it's
C harley Welch.

be now I could handle a solo spot
and not go tw itc h y and m u ff it. So
I ask Jake L ittle to give me a try .
And he does, on one o f the m a ti­
nees.
Do I go over big? No. I sit back
th e re and I don’t look at the a u d i­
ence b u t 1 know i t ’s out fro n t. A ll
th e m eyes. I begin to sweat and
m y m ou th goes to ju m p in g . I s ig ­
n a l Jake and he gets C h a rley to
take over.
I d o n 't even ask M arg e to let me
ta ke h e r home, I ju s t go on to m y
own place.
And I th in k about
out there.
