RED ( ’ROSS FIRST
AID REFRESH ER
CLASSES PLANNED
Carl Carpenter, first aid chair
man of the Josephine county Red
Cross chapter, today announced
plans for refresher courses to be
held in the near future with an
eye to reorganizing the entire
first aid set-up in the county.
Present plans include visits
from field representatives of the
Red Cross, who will present in
struction on the new texts com
piled from developments growing
out of the war. Re-establishment
of first aid stations throughout the
county is another feature of the
first aid division to be revived.
Carpenter, in an effort to make
an up-to-date list of those hold
ing first aid certificates, standard,
advanced, or instructors’, has
asked that anyone in the county
with these cards still in force, con
tact the Red Cross office in the
county courthouse by letter or by
phoning 521 and reporting the
type of card held.
To be “in force” the card must
not have been issued more than
three years ago. Those holding
cards dated more than three years
ago must have had a refresher
course within the past three year
period or the entire course must
be repeated. The standard first aid
course consists of 20 hours of in
struction and practice; the ad
vanced course, ten additional
hours; and the instructor’s course,
15 hours in addition to the two
other courses.
Anyone wishing to take the
first aid courses, or anyone hold
ing one of the cards still in force
but wishing to take an advanced
or instructor’s course is also asked
to contact the Red Cross office in
the courthouse.

W. T. Miller was called on for
remarks. Mr. Miller gave his lis
teners much valuable information,
telling them where some revenues
would come from if the city were
incorporated, and explaining that
very little expense need be made
in the cost of government.
One of the big benefits in in
corporating now would be to es
tablish the city's credit. He ex
plained if we incorporated now, it
would be a long time before we
could get money enough to main
tain a water system and lay a sew
er system. “You can't start dig
ging a sewer system next year or
the year after that; it might be
four years before you could build
such a system,” he said. But if
you incorporate now, you are pav
ing the way for this improvement
in the future. A city must estab
lish itself on a safe and sane basis
before banks or even the govern
ment would lend money for im
provements. Those were not his ex
act words, but the meaning is
there.
Mr. Roberts, of the First Na
tional Bank spoke a few words of
encouragement. He is the first
banker we ever heard who said
we needed a bank, and intimated
he would like to help us get one.
He also said that he believed we
would stand a better chance to
get a bank if the city were incor
porated.
County Clerk Ben Coutant was
called on and he said we gave him
a headache, because he had to
come out and count noses and find
out how "many could vote at the
election next Monday. He was out
Tuesday after the meeting and said
that there were 180 voters qual
ified to vote Monday within the
proposed incorporated district,
his figure is much larger than was
expected.

At long last we can see our way out of the woods. No longer is there a
backlog of veterans waiting for transportation to their homes. The peak
movement seems to be definitely over.
We want to sincerely thank all the civilians who refrained from traveling
to make room for these men. And we want to point out that now some
space is available on some Southern Pacific trains for you who wish to travel.
In other words, we can say "Next time, try the train”, but as yet we can’t
say it very loud.
There is now quite a bit of space available in coaches and chair cars.
Sleeping car space is tighter in comparison, but considerably more plentiful
than it was, especially on certain trains.
Please call us if you’re planning a trip anywhere. We’ll do our liest to get
you the reservations you want.

HARDW ARE
With our heavy war load easing, we will soon speed up trains and return
the lounge cars and other refinements in service that we had to discon
tinue during the war.
Meanwhile we are going full speed ahead with an ambitious program of
new streamlined trains that will be the finest the world has ever seen.
