THEY DON’T STRIKE
The refusal of nationwide farm organizations to
sanction a farm strike expresses the true spirit of the
American farmers. However much the vast major
ity of farmers may he incensed by labor strikes, es
pecially those which delay desperately needed farm
equipment, they realize that striking against strik
ers would chiefly harm innocent bystanders—the pub
lic.
The unselfish and consistent service of the Amer
ican farmers has been paraded only by the service
of such groups as the independent grocers who mar
ket the greater part of the Nation’s farm products
either as fresh fruits and vegetables or as pro
cessed foods.
The independent grocers, whether in business in
metropolitan centers or in crossroad villages, have
been keenly aware of their responsibilities to their
customers and communities and they have as a whole
conscientiously fulfilled that responsibility.
One can well imagine the chaos that would result
if either the independent grocers or the farmers were
actually to go on strike. We would realize as never
before .just how valuable a service they perform.
But that isn’t the method of either group—thank
heavens!

NEW STARS ON THE FLAG?
If pither Hawaii or Alaska comes into the Union
it will mean that a 49th star will have to be added to
“Old Glory.”
Reports from Washington indicate there is consid
erable talk as to where that star would be placed.
The present 48 stars make a square with 8 stars
across and 6 down. If one more were added the stars
could be rearranged in rows of 7 each way. What
happens, though, if both Hawaii and Alaska come in?
How would we arrange 56 stars?
Time was when the flag was changed so often that
flag designers had plenty of practise. But it has now
been 31 years since the last “remodeling" and the
designers have grown rather rusty.
Of one thing we can I k * sure, however, that if and
when we have 49 or 50 states we’ll have that many
stars—even though Betsy Ross won’t lie on hand to
lend her assistance in arranging them.
