George W. Swinney, Eagle
Point, recently received a letter
flow a WAC, member of the Sig
nal Section,'stationed somewhere
in Italy. She has been overseas
for more than 14 months, ten of
which were served in Africa. She
writes of the hardships encounter
ed by her unit but states they have
nothing to complain about com
pared to the boys at the front. The
letter follows:
Dear George:
"I only wish that those who
complain of inconveniences at
home could see Cassino- utter de
struction of a whole town. Noth
ing left but ruins and most of those
only a pile of rubble. But the peo
ple are back! Nothing was left,
but it is still their home so they
returned.
“They camp there under the
ruins or beside them despite mines
and booby traps and despite the
drenching downpours and the mud.
What they eat or how they live, I
don’t know.
“There is a stillness of death
over Cassino- not the peaceful si
lence of Pompei, but a brooding
ghostly silence that envelops th«*
place like a shroud, and yet it must
have been a pretty town—it was
nestled against the hill in a tiny
