Illinois Valley News, Thursday, July 29, 1943 WE SALUTE A W S (Continued from Page One) Air Force’s Aircraft Warning Service in this country and in any of the combat zones in which it operates and we might well have another Pearl Harbor. In the last 18 months there has been develop ed an aircraft warning system op erating with an efficiency permit ting a performance something like this: Let an enemy plane approach either coast and the army can have fighter planes in the air within a few minutes after the approaching aircraft have been reported. It has been estimated that one plane on “ground alert” through an ad equate warning system is worth more than 16 planes in the air on “search patrol”. The other 15 planes and their crews can be re leased to carry the offensive to the enemy in Europe, Africa and the Aleutians, and Southwest Pa cific. “The Fourth Fighter Command is charged with the protection of the Pacific Coast from invasion of enemy aircraft. They are using the Ground Observer Corps to keep them constantly informed of all air traffic in the western de fense command area. By volun-1 leering in the above service you may serve any time you can spare a few hours from your already' busy schedule.” After reading the above, I think we will all realize more fully the necessity of keeping these posts manned, and also that we,1 each one of us, who serves at one of these Observation Posts, is doing a real service for our country, let us sign up for this service, it is so important and yet takes so little of our time, call me or see me per sonally and enroll your name in . this army of volunteer workers. In fact, south* ern Oregon forests have already been attacked! Other attempts are almost cer tain to be made— and if successful will divert sorely needed manpower from war industries to the task of fighting destructive fire and will consume vitally needed war materials. The Japs well know the value of the forests of this state and would be willing to pay a high price for a successful raid here. Many “in the know” honestly believe that an enemy raid WILL be attempted somewhere on the Pacific Coast, maybe in several places. You can actually shorten the ss**r by helping insure the FAILURE of such an attack. And you don’t have to put on a uniform to do it, either. Here’s U.S.WAR BONDS how: Sign up for non-military, volun teer work in the vital Aircraft Wan ing Service — the amazing warning syftem of the U. S. Army that keeps the whole Pacific Coait constantly alert, warns of the approach of unidentified aircraft, actually plots the course of every aircraft apnroTching or flying over this area.
