Invading Vincent’s Privacy
Because the jury at the first trial
of Boss Tweed in New York city
in 1873 disagreed on a verdict, the
prosecution at the second trial
made certain that it had 12 “un­
touchable” jurors by assigning 13
officers to watch them, 12 watch­
ers to watch the officers and 13
other watchers to watch tha
watchers, all 36 of whom had to
make a daily report.
Modern streamlined war may
have changed the arms and meth­
ods of Uncle Sam's soldiers, but
it hasn't changed the Army man's
smoking preference.
