Santa had to arrange his hours to the best possible advantage, so the following schedule will have to be lived up to, and we do hope that a lot of people will be in the stores waiting for him to appear. Here is Santa’s schedule, for Saturday afternoon, December 21: Mrs. White's Variety Store from 4 to 5 p. m. Model Grocery from 3 to 4 p: m. Martin’s Hardware from 5 to 5:30 p. m. Arnold’s Grocery from 6 to 6:30 p. m. Haynes’ Clothing Shop from 6:30 to 7 p. m. Scott's Market from 7 to 8 p. m. Cave City Drug Store from 8 to 9 p. m. Leaving for Midway Island, where Uncle Sam is building a naval outpost and air field, 10 men from the Illinois valley took the bus from Grants Pass last Friday for San Francisco, where they were given a medical exami nation, and after passing it, signed for a year’s stay on the island to help in the defense program. All the boys who were in the draft age, were given a release to go to Mid way. They sailed, if the schedule was followed today (Thursday) from San Francisco for Midway, and If nothing went wrong all the boys were on the boat when it left. The crew was engaged by W. A. Branham, foreman of the Pom eroy ranch, and the men will work for J. H. Pomeroy & Co., Inc., of San Francisco. It has been rumored that an other crew of men from the val ley are expecting to get a call to go to the island if they want a job there. The men must sign up for a year, and their expenses are pail there and back if they stay the year, but they can leave when ever they want to, but will have to pay their own fare home if they do not stay a year. ------------ o--------•---- BOB GEORGE IS SERIOUSLY HURT » Today, Thursday, Bob George was seriously injured while driv ing a team on his ranch. The horses bolted and ran away and Mr. George was thrown from the wagon, which ran over him. Dr. A. N. H. Branham, foreman of the Pomeroy ranch, discovered fire and smoke coming from the big barn on the ranch and hurried to try to put it out, but was unable to do so, and the barn and contents wqs a com plete loss. The barn, which was a very large one, was packed to the ceil ing with a new crop of hay, and in order to get it all in, it had to be baled. There was also some stock and considerable farm ma chinery, saddles and harness in the place. The stock was out but one calf, which was destroyed. The harness, saddles and other equip ment was also destroyed. The flames, which lit up the sky for miles, attracted quite a gathering, but there was nothing anyone could do but look on. We believe Mr. Pomeroy will build an other barn in the spring, but he has not given us this information. It is believed the fire was start ed by a spontaneous combustion in the hay stored in the loft. .1 Valley Boys Who Left for Midway Leave for Pomeroy Barn Burned Last Thursday Night ) Price 5 Cent« Coming to -O- I Cave Junction, Oregon, Thursday, December 19, 1940 No. 33 Pictured above are the boye who left San Francieco for Midway Island today (Thursday).
